Resolution 2018-30559 RESOLUTION NO. 2018-30559 A RESOLUTION OF THE MAYOR AND CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA, APPROVING THE CLOSURE OF 5 STREET, FROM OCEAN DRIVE TO COLLINS AVENUE, ON SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 11, 2018 FROM 8:00 A.M THROUGH 1:00 P.M., FOR THE MIAMI BEACH VETERANS DAY PARADE. WHEREAS, Miami Beach Veterans Day Parade is scheduled to take place on Ocean Drive; and WHEREAS, in order to ensure a safe and welcoming event, the City desires to close 5 Street, on November 11, 2018 at 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.; and WHEREAS, a Maintenance of Traffic plan has been reviewed by the Transportation Department and the Miami Beach Police Department; and WHEREAS, on July 13, 2016, the Mayor and City Commission adopted Resolution No. 2016-29506, requiring that any special event seeking to close a road or lane of a major thoroughfare in the City of Miami Beach, such as this requested closure of 5 Street, must seek prior approval from the Miami Beach City Commission. NOW THEREFORE, BE IT DULY RESOLVED BY THE MAYOR AND CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA,that the Mayor and City Commission hereby approve the closure of 5 Street between Ocean Drive and Collins Avenue on November 11, 2018, from 8 a.m. through 1 p.m. for the Miami Beach Veteran's Day Parade. Morales, City Manager DATE: October 17, 2018 SUBJECT: A RESOLUTION OF THE MAYOR AND CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA, APPROVING MIAMI BEACH VETERANS DAY PARADE REQUEST FOR THE CLOSURE OF 5TH STREET, A MAJOR ROADWAY, FROM COLLINS AVENUE TO OCEAN DRIVE, ON SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 11, 2018 FROM 8:00 A.M. THROUGH 1:00 PM FOR THE TENTH ANNUAL VETERANS DAY PARADE. RECOMMENDATION The Administration recommends approval of this closure. ANALYSIS On November 11, 2018 the City of Miami Beach will host their annual Veterans Day Parade to honor the service of our veterans and salute our current serving military. The parade route will travel along Ocean Drive from fifth to 14 street. Parade participation has grown over the past ten years, multiplying from approximately 50 individuals to over 2,000 including veterans from all eras, military units, students, public officials, marching bands and local businesses. The parade is followed by our traditional ceremony at Lummus Park which includes military fly-overs, veterans parachute team and a wreath laying. CONCLUSION As this closure is critical to the successful and safe execution of the Miami Beach Veterans Day Parade, the Administration recommends approving the requested closure.
