2018-30603 Resolution RESOLUTION NO. 2018-30603 A RESOLUTION OF THE MAYOR AND CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA, REAFFIRMING THE CITY'S COMMITMENT TO LOVE AND UNITY IN VIEW OF RECENT HATE CRIMES AND ACTS OF VIOLENCE AND RACISM THROUGHOUT OUR NATION AND COMMUNITY. WHEREAS, the City of Miami Beach has a long history of championing human rights and embracing equality and inclusiveness for all persons regardless of, among other things, their race, national origin, religion, sex, gender identity, disability, age, or political affiliation; and WHEREAS, horrific acts of terrorism, hate, and violence have plagued our nation and state in recent years including mass shootings in schools and entertainment venues in Orlando, Las Vegas, Parkland, and Jacksonville, in a church in Sutherland Springs, Texas, and, most recently, in a synagogue in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; and WHEREAS, these recent acts of unspeakable violence, hate, racism, and prejudice cannot be tolerated and are the antitheses of a civilized society; and WHEREAS, communities and people must come together in love, unity, and compassion for our neighbors and stand up to hatred, racism, and violence, and denounce and refuse to tolerate the very existence of these evils; and WHEREAS, in furtherance of the spirit of unity and brotherhood demonstrated by the recent Interfaith Solidarity Vigil held at the City's Holocaust Memorial, which was attended by thousands of people of all races, creeds, and backgrounds, the Miami Beach City Commission is committed to standing firm against hate, racism, and violence and will uphold the principles of unity, inclusiveness, peaceful co-existence, and love within the City of Miami Beach. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT DULY RESOLVED BY THE MAYOR AND THE CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA that the Mayor and City Commission hereby reaffirm the City's commitment to love and unity in view of recent hate crimes and acts of violence and racism throughout our nation and community.
