Resolution 12341 RESOLUTION NO. 12340
WHEREAS, for a long period of time, whenever a serious
criminal offense has been committed in the municipalities
and the unincorporated area which constitute the ocean front
of Dade County, the news media have, on many occasions,
characterized and described the locale as being in Miami Beach,
when in truth and in fact a substantial portion of said crimes
and criminal offenses are committed outside the corporate limits
of the City of Miami Beach and in areas wherein the City of
Miami Beach has no jurisdiction, legal or otherwise; and
WHEREAS, the characterization of such crimes as having
occurred in Miami Beach does great harm to the tourist industry,
not only in the City of Miami Beach, but also in the County of
Dade and State of Florida; and
WHEREAS, the Grand Jury for the 1967 Spring Term for
the Eleventh Judicial Circuit in and for Dade County, Florida,
has taken official cognizance of the injustice and injury
which is thereby done to the City of Miami Beach; and
WHEREAS, the said Grand Jury has, in effect, strongly
recommended and urged that the City of Miami Beach not be
held culpable or responsible for criminal offenses not committed
within its corporate limits;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT DULY RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL
OF THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA, that the newspapers and
all of the various news media be and they are hereby urged and
requested to take notice and cognizance of the fact that the
corporate limits of the City of Miami Beach extend only from
Government Cut northward to 87th Terrace.
BE IT FURTHER DULY RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE
CITY OF MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA, that the journalists and other
representatives of the daily press, and other news media,
be and they are hereby further requested to take note, and
are hereby respectfully but strongly urged to bear in mind,
the said corporate limits of the City of Miami Beach when report-
ing the occurrence of any crime or criminal offense, and not to
loosely and inaccurately describe any crime or criminal offense
as having occurred in the City of Miami Beach, when in truth
and in fact the same has occurred or transpired in the area
north of the City of Miami Beach.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF
MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA, that copies of this resolution be
transmitted to the responsible officials of the daily press and
other news media.
