LTC 107-2003 CITY OF MIAMI BEACH Office of the City Manager Letter to Commission No. To: From: Subject: Mayor David Dermer Jorge M. Gonzall~Z City Manager South Pointe Pal~k Ot~ean-up -Volunteer Network Date: May 5, 2003 The City of Miami Beach launched its Neighborhood Services Volunteer Network in September 2002, honoring the courageous spirit of the American people, and paying tribute to those we lost on September 11,2001. I wanted residents to understand how important civic involvement is to the democratic process to which the American people have pledged. The Volunteer Network recruits, places and recognizes citizen and employee volunteers that assist in various city projects and at special events. It is a resident-driven initiative; a working group of residents meets regularly to suggest new ways of engaging their neighbors in civic participation. The Volunteer Network is a comprehensive volunteer service program that will encourage public participation and utilize volunteers in their skilled or interest areas. It is also a way to give back to the community that you live in and, for some, to earn valuable community service hours. In November 2002, at "All Hands on Miami Beach Day", we were able to provide opportunities for over 200 volunteers in the restoration of the natural hammock at North Shore Open Space Park. This effort led to an ongoing monthly program "ADOPT-A-Park whereby 20 dedicated volunteers continue the efforts begun and meet monthly in the park to assist the Parks department with the restoration project. On Saturday, May 10th the City of Miami Beach Neighborhood Services Department through the Volunteer Network will be facilitating the Clean-up of South Pointe Park at 8.30 am. The City of Miami Beach, Volunteer Network has partnered with the Boy Scouts of America (South Florida Council) and BFI Waste Systems to join forces and cleanup South Pointe Park. Approximately 50 Boy Scouts and BFI will be removing trash and litter from South Pointe Park, 100 Collins Ave. Boy Scout troops from Miami-Dade County will supply the "boy power" to remove litter and debris and BFI will provide bags and gloves for the scouts, as well as bins and trucks to pick it up, The waste removal and recycling company will also contribute bottled water during the clean-up and pizza for the scouts at the park following the clean-up. The City of Miami Beach will coordinate sanitation services and the Parks Department will assist the volunteers by providing an orientation for the protection of the native plants on the dunes and in the park. You are all encouraged to attend the South Pointe Clean-up and support this effort, as well as the volunteers that will be donating ~leir time for this event. /I Jc:M,~toNbe~C~l~i~daugh, Assistant City Manager Vivian Guzman, Director of Neighborhood Services Nannette Rodriguez, Public Information Officer
