During a ceremony that took place on April 25, 2003, members of the community, non-profit subrecipients and volunteers gathered to hear keynote speaker Jim Chaplin, from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. Mr. Chaplin celebrated Miami Beach's unique community development and housing programs, some of which serve as a model to the rest of the nation. Attendees also celebrated the presentation of the fourth annual Community Heroes Awards. See attached for Resolution No. 2003- 25169, dated April 9, 2003, which proclaimed the celebration of Community Development Week 2003. The Community Heroes Awards Program has been so successful that, in 2001, the Administration made it an annual program to coincide with the celebration of Community Development Week in Miami Beach. The City and the Community Relations Board have presented these awards during the last four celebrations of Community Development Week, to individuals, government agencies, nonprofit organizations and business partners, to commemorate their work for the benefit of the residents of Miami Beach. Nominations were due March 8, 2003, and articles regarding the program ran in the Herald on February 6th and February 9th, and in the Hola Amigos newspaper on February 14th. The Community Relations Board made their selections on April 8, 2003. See attached copy of Letter to Commission No. 37-2003, which details criteria for selection of award recipients. The City has presented these awards for the last four years, to commemorate the achievements of individuals and organizations, at work for the benefit of the residents of Miami Beach. A reception will be held on Tuesday, February 25 at 5:00 p.m. at Miami Beach City Hall's Fourth Floor Gallery to showcase the art and honor the Chamber. The event will also feature guest speaker Gail Thompson, executive director, Performing Arts Center of Greater Miami. The Miami-Dada Chamber of Commerce has provided opportuni- ties for local business entrepre- neurs, provided thousands of dollars in college scholarships for youth, and have promoted and assisted in community and economic develop- ment programs. The exhibit, made possible by Diaspora Vibe Gallery, features the following artists: Ray Parris, Andree Ferdinand, Christine Matuschek, Asser Saint-Val, Nakazzi Hutchinson, Rodney Jackson, Michael Mendenhall, Roger Brathwaite, Phillip Mallory-Jones, Gregory Owens, Gerard Paul, Rhoma, Samuel Watson and Glenford John. Diaspora Vibe Gallery is a local arts organization offering support and exhibition opportunities to Emerging Artists from Latin America and Caribbean Diaspora. Cristina Saralegui and Chelsea Handler of Oxygen's "Girls Behaving Badly" pull a prank on an uneupecting "mark" for the hidden camera show. "Girls Behaving Badly" turns up the heat on Miami when the hidden- camera prank show storms the beaches on the first stop in its "Prank Across America Tour.' The Miami show airs on Oxygen in April as part of a week of special episodes filmed in cities across the 'Girls Behaving Badly" features an all-female cast pulling hidden cam- era pranks on unsuspecting 'marks.' While in town, the "Girls" will take to the streets to catch the residents of Miami off-guard with their signature pranks. Cafes, nightclubs, the beach...anyplace is fair game for the "Girls" outrageous brand of humor. "Girls Behaving Badly," which airs Sundays at 8:00 p.m.,' is the only hidden camera show where women are in control of the comedy, and the cast of eight will do almost anything in the name of humor. Oxygen will also run a sweepstakes as part of 'Prank Across America." Viewers can go online to oxygen.com to 'Rank The Prank' (their favorite "Girls Behaving Badly' prank) viewed via streaming video and enter the sweepstakes. The grand-prize winner gets a trip with three friends to Miami Beach worth $10,000. Miami Beach Seeks Community Heroes Nominations The City of Miami Beach ia seek- ing nominations for the fourth annual Community Heroes Awards, a program to commemo- rate the achievements of individu- als and organizations benefiting the residents of Miami Beach. It is an annual awards program with a celebration that coincides with the Community Development Week celebration in Miami Beach. This year, National Community Development Week will be held on the week of April 21 - 27. This annual national celebration Is when entitlement cities across the country commemorate the myriad achievements made possi- ble through the uae of Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funds. Deadline for nominations is March 8, 2003. Awards will be presented April 25, 2003, during the celebration of Community Development Week 2003 in Miami Beach. "Aa it moves forward with the third year of this successful pro- gram, the City wants to celebrate the important contributions that individuals and organizations have made to our community," said Miami Beach City Manager Jorge M. Gonzalez. The City of Miami Beach expects to receive approximately $2.1 mil- lion in CDBG funds for fiscal year 2003. These funds will provide broad-baaed community services that run the gamut from hot meals to neighborhood revitalization; from programs that assist the homeless.ts child cam aervices; from elderly services to VOCation- al tuition waivers to home-deliv- ered meals. The programs funded with CDBG funds benefit one in every eight of the City's residents.
