As a member of the Miami Beach Personnel Board, we created the City’s first employee “peoples choice award” to honor hard working City employees and provide an opportunity for residents citywide to participate. This year’s Planning Board agendas were filled with issues relevant to all residents of Miami Beach, but I’m most proud of the work we completed on the massive North Beach Town Center zoning ordinance. Thanks to the work of so many, North Beach residents have much to look forward to. I’m pleased to have played a small part in building a better North Beach. Why are you interested in serving on the City Commission? I'd like to continue my work on behalf of residents and stakeholders, as we face substantial challenges including protecting our beaches and water quality, sea level rise, affordable housing, public safety and security, transportation and mobility. I believe I can add significant value because of my experience with our City government and issues, through my involvement with the South of Fifth Neighborhood Association, Miami Beach United, and now as a member of our Planning Board. Additionally, I believe that my unique leadership approach, which includes listening, learning and bringing folks together, is always needed. How does your education and/or experience complement the powers and duties of the City Commission? 1) I’ll hit the ground running. I’m a member of the Miami Beach Planning Board. This year, we’ve tackled a host of important citywide issues. Hours of preparation for Planning Board agenda items, including site visits, research and face-to-face meetings with City staff and stakeholders provide a foundation of knowledge and ensure that I’ll be effective on day one – January 24, 2019. 2) A proven track record in community service as Board Member and President of two important resident organizations in Miami Beach. Also, South of Fifth Neighborhood Association Board members are elected (I was elected 2 times), helping to make sure that resident’s voices are heard and concerns addressed. Together with a great team of engaged residents, we made a real impact in the South of Fifth neighborhood. 3) As an entrepreneur and small business owner, I would look for opportunities to bring best business practices to City government (efficiency, innovation, planning, feedback, discipline).
