Resolution 78-15572 RESOLUTION NO. 78-15572 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH EXPRESSING FOR ITSELF AND FOR THE CITIZENS OF THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH UNALTERABLE OPPOSITION TO THE PLAN PROPOSED BY ADMINISTRATIVE OFFICIALS OF THE DADE COUNTY SCHOOL BOARD TO TRANSFER STUDENTS FROM SOUTH BEACH AND LEROY D. FIENBERG ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS AND THE PHASING OUT OF IDA M. FISHER JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL. WHEREAS, it has come to the attention of the City Com- mission of the City of Miami Beach that administrative staff personnel of the Dade County School Board have evolved proposed plans for the alteration of school boundaries for the purpose of greater utilization of existing school facilities in the City of Miami, and WHEREAS, included in said proposed and tentative admin- istrative plans is the transferal of Miami Beach school children presently attending South Beach and Leroy D. Fienberg Elementary Schools to other facilities located in the City of Miami, together ' with the possible phasing out of Ida M. Fisher Junior High School, \and WHEREAS, said elements of such proposal has given rise to profound concern and vigorous opposition among interested and concerned parents in the City of Miami Beach which reaction is shared by the Mayor and each member of the City Commission of the City of Miami Beach, not only as concerned and vitally interested individuals, but also as duly authorized and elected representa- tives of the citizens and residents of the City of Miami Beach, and WHEREAS, one of the prime considerations for the evolve- ment of said tentative proposal is a desire and attempt to increase the enrollment at Northwestern High School, which is critically underutilized at the present time, and WHEREAS, it is the firm belief and conviction of the City Commission of the City of Miami Beach and the interested parents of said City that the said proposal to transfer Miami Beach students to school facilities located in the City of Miami for the prime purpose of increasing the student enrollment to acceptable economic levels does violence and is contrary to the fundamental principles of equality of education and the rights thereto of all school children, and WHEREAS, the City of Miami Beach and its citizens and residents take the highest and most inordinate pride in the fact that they have demonstrated a history of complete, total and enthusiastic embracement of the principle of school integration • and have given wholehearted and undivided cooperation to the principles thereof as is manifested by existing school integration within the public schools of this community and desire to continue manifesting such cooperation; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE UNANIMOUS VOTE OF THE MAYOR AND EACH MEMBER OF THE CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA, that each and every member of the Dade County School Board, and its Superintendent, be and they are hereby formally advised and informed of the unalterable opposition of the City Commission of the City of Miami Beach, Florida, and of X OFFICE OF THE CITY ATTORNEY-1700 CONVENTION CENTER DRIVE -MIAMI BEACH,FLORIDA 33139 ;',1-/ y3-72 all the vitally concerned and interested parents and citizens of the City of Miami Beach to the said staff proposal as hereinabove delineated, or any other suggestion or proposal, the implementa- tion of which requires the transferal of Miami Beach school children to the City of Miami, as being destructive of the very purposes, object and intent of the principles of school integra- tion and earnestly urges upon the Dade County School Board, and its Superintendent, to take prompt and immediate action to dis- approve and reject the said proposal or any kindred plan by its administrative staff; BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED BY THE CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA, . that copies of this Resolution be • transmitted immediately and forthwith to each member of the Dade County School Board and the Superintendent and to all interested parties and news media.
