A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COMMISSION OF THE
CITY OF MIAMI BEACH, ENDORSING THE CONCEPT
OF AEROVIRONMENT INC. TO UTILIZE AN INEXHAUST-
IBLE AND ENVIRONMENTALLY BENIGN POWER SOURCE,
KNOWN AS THE "CORIOLIS OCEAN ENERGY SYSTEM" ;
AND PETITIONING THE FLORIDA DELEGATION TO THE
UNITED STATES CONGRESS TO EXPLORE AEROVIRONMENT' S
CONCEPT AS A VIABLE MEANS OF HARNESSING ENERGY
IN THE GULF STREAM AS AN ALTERNATIVE SOURCE OF
ENERGY.
WHEREAS, the City Commission of the City of Miami Beach,
Florida, is constantly searching for new ways and means of pro-
moting energy conservation; and .
WHEREAS, the Ad Hoc Committee on Energy was charged
with the responsibility of studying and demonstrating the viability •
of harnessing alternative sources of energy as a possible solution
' to the energy situation; and
WHEREAS, AeroVironment Inc. , has developed a system
which can produce large amounts of power, at rates which are
comparable and slightly lower than the cost of new conventional
oil or coal plants; and
WHEREAS, the proposed "Coriolis Ocean Energy System"
could produce almost 1/3 of the current electrical energy require-
ments of Miami Beach, and reduce the City' s dependents on the
inevitable increase in oil prices, and possibly alleviate the =r
continued political and environmental issues associated with
nuclear power; and
WHEREAS, harnessing the energy of ocean currents would
provide an economic benefit to the State of Florida by providing
a new clean technology with-a large commercial potential;
NOW, THERFORE, BE IT DULY RESOLVED BY THE CITY COMMISSION
OF THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA:
1. That the City Commission hereby endorses the concept
of the "Coriolis Ocean Energy System" as developed
by AeroVironment Inc. of Pasadena, California and
as recommended by the Ad Hoc Energy Committee.
2. That the Florida Delegation to . the United States
Congress be and it is hereby petitioned and memorialized
to consider favorably the funding of projects which
would study the possibility of harnessing the energy
of ocean currents as an alternative source of energy.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED BY THE CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY
OF MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA, that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted
to each member of the Florida Delegation to the United States Congress.
PASSED and ADOPTED this 16th day of May, 1979 .
