City Commissioner Aleman Decides Not To Seek Re- election
Family is Aleman's Priority and Short Term Goals Achieved
Miami Beach, FL — This is an Open Letter to Miami Beach from City Commissioner John
Elizabeth Aleman.
I write to share with you that I will not be seeking re- election as your City Commissioner in
Group 6 in the upcoming November 2019 election. This decision is strictly personal and made
with the full support of my family.
As greatly as I bear my responsibility to all of the residents of Miami Beach, I am a mother first.
While I may consider a future role in public service, the timing is right for me now with both
sons in their teens to focus on their needs and see them successfully launched on to college and
their own adult lives.
I am very proud of my accomplishments in service to you and our City. Miami Beach is well
positioned, with a newly completed Convention Center, a much needed Convention Center Hotel
on the way, an approved General Obligation Bond that will yield two new parks, a new public
library, stronger public safety and even more beautiful, shady neighborhoods, not to mention a
bright future for North Beach with the Town Center and Historic Districts created last year.
There have been other accomplishments that perhaps garnered less press, but that I am very
proud of, including zoning changes to protect neighborhoods from the invasion of commercial
sober houses and detox centers, measures to control excessive proliferation of cannabis
dispensaries, a human trafficking initiative that resulted in the closure of four massage parlors,
and many resident - friendly code changes that ease transition for homeowners as the City installs
new underground infrastructure and raises our City streets.
I may not have always told constituents what they wanted to hear, but certainly always what they
needed to know, even at the risk of being the bearer of unwelcome news.
While Miami Beach is poised for greatness, there is still a lot of work to do, particularly to
prepare for climate change and sea level rise while protecting our homes and property values.
The timing of my announcement is intended to give my fellow residents plenty of time to launch

a successful Commission campaign to keep our City on the right track. I hope that anyone
reading this press release hears my call to action to get involved, and participate in our local
government: it is not overly dramatic to say that the future of our City at this critical juncture in
time rests in the hands of our locally elected Mayor and Commissioners. Choose wisely.
In the final 10 months of my Commission term you will see no change in how I act or vote: I
have always voted on what I expected to be best for the City overall, not what was popular in
order to get re- elected. I will continue to provide you with exceptional constituent service. I will
continue to advance and fight for the solutions that will strengthen our City and ensure our
resilient future.
I want to express my heart-felt thanks to my Commission Aide, Cilia Maria Ruiz -Paz, our City
Manager Jimmy Morales, City Attorney Raul Aguila, City Clerk Rafael Granado and their fine
staffs. I thank our Mayor and my fellow Commissioners for the personal sacrifices they make to
serve Miami Beach. It has been my pleasure to serve with you.
For all of you, my friends, who have supported me and appreciated my hard - working, fair and
honest approach to policy making: we will be getting together soon to talk one on one about the
future. In the meantime, my voice will continue to be heard through November, and I will
continue to be a caring custodian of the trust the public has placed in me.
I close this letter thinking of all the moments I fondly remember: all the times that you called me,
and I was able to help you, solve a problem for you, give you the information you needed, or put
your great ideas into action. It has been a privilege. Through your eyes I have seen the City in
new ways and love her even more for the experience. I am able to share a perspective with my
children that otherwise would have been out of reach. For the honor to serve you and your
families for these four years, I will forever be grateful.
Thank you for trusting in me, it has been a pleasure to work for you and the people of Miami
Beach.

La comisionada de la ciudad Aleman decide no buscar la reeleccion
La familia es la prioridad de aleman y las metas a corto plazo logradas
Miami Beach, FL — Esta es una Carta Abierta a Miami Beach del Comisionada de la Ciudad
John Elizabeth Aleman.
Les escribo para compartirles que no buscare la reeleccion como su Comisionada de la Ciudad
en el Grupo 6 en las proximas elecciones de noviembre de 2019. Esta decision es estrictamente
personal y se toma con el apoyo total de mi familia.
Tan importante como asumo mi responsabilidad para con todos los residentes de Miami Beach,
primero soy una madre. Si bien puedo considerar un rol futuro en el servicio publico, el
momento es el adecuado para mi ahora con ambos hijos en su adolescencia para concentrarme en
sus necesidades y ver como se inician con exito en la universidad y sus propias vidas adultas.
Estoy muy orgullosa de mis logros al servicio de usted y de nuestra Ciudad Miami Beach esta
bien posicionada, con un Centro de Convenciones recien terminado, un muy necesitado Hotel del
Centro de Convenciones en camino, un Bono de Obligacion General aprobado que generara dos
nuevos parques, una nueva biblioteca publica, una mayor seguridad publica y vecindarios aun
mas hermosos y sombrios, por no mencionar un futuro brillante para North Beach con el Centro
de la Ciudad y los Distritos Historicos creados el ano pasado. Ha habido otros logros que quizas
obtuvieron menos prensa, pero de los que estoy muy orgullosa, incluidos los cambios de
zonificacion para proteger a los vecindarios de la invasion de las casas de sobriedad comerciales
y los centros de desintoxicacion, medidas para controlar la proliferacion excesiva de dispensarios
de cannabis, una iniciativa de trafico humano que resulto en el cierre de cuatro salones de
masajes y muchos cambios en el codigo para residentes que facilitan la transicion para los
propietarios de viviendas a medida que la Ciudad instala una nueva infraestructura subterranea y
eleva las canes de nuestra Ciudad.
Puede que no siempre les haya dicho a los electores lo que querian escuchar, pero ciertamente
siempre lo que necesitaban saber, incluso a riesgo de ser portador de noticias no deseadas.
Si bien Miami Beach esta preparada para la grandeza, todavia hay mucho trabajo por hacer,
particularmente para prepararse para el cambio climatico y el aumento del nivel del mar mientras

protegemos nuestros hogares y los valores de las propiedades. El momento de mi anuncio tiene
la intencion de dar a mis companeros residentes tiempo suficiente para lanzar una campana
exitosa de la Comision para mantener a nuestra Ciudad en el camino correcto. Espero que todos
los que lean este comunicado de prensa escuchen mi llamado a la accion para participar y tomar
parte de nuestro gobierno local: no es demasiado dramatico decir que el futuro de nuestra Ciudad
en esta coyuntura critica en el tiempo esta en manos de nuestro Alcalde y Comisionados elegidos
localmente. Elige sabiamente.
En los ultimos 10 meses de mi mandato como Comisionada, no veras ningun cambio en la forma
en que actuo o voto: siempre he votado en base a lo que esperaba que fuera mejor para la ciudad
en general, no en base a lo que era popular para ser reelegido. Continuare brindandoles un
servicio constituyente excepcional. Seguire avanzando y luchando por las soluciones que
fortalezcan nuestra ciudad y aseguren nuestro futuro resiliente.
Quiero expresar mi mas sincero agradecimiento a mi asistente de la Comision, Cilia Maria Ruiz -
Paz, nuestro Administrador de la Ciudad. Jimmy Morales, Abogado de la Ciudad Raul Aguila,
Secretario Municipal Rafael Granado y su excelente personal. Agradezco al Alcalde y a mis
companeros Comisionados por los sacrificios personales que hacen para servir a Miami Beach.
Ha sido un placer server contigo.
Para todos ustedes, mis amigos, que me han apoyado y apreciado mi enfoque trabajador, justo y
honesto para la formulacion de political: nos reuniremos pronto para hablar individualmente
sobre el futuro. Mientras tanto, mi voz continuara siendo escuchada hasta noviembre, y
continuara siendo un cuidadoso custodio de la confianza que el publico ha depositado en mi.
Termino esta carta pensando en todos los momentos que recuerdo con mucho carifio: todas las
veces que me llamaste y pude ayudarte, resolver un problema, brindar la informacion que
necesitabas o poner en practica sus grander ideas. Ha sido un privilegio. A traves de tus ojos, he
visto la ciudad de nuevas maneras y la quiero aun mas por la experiencia. Puedo compartir una
perspectiva con mis hijos que de otro modo habria estado fuera de alcance. Por el honor de
servirles a usted y a sus familias durante estos cuatro anos, siempre estare agradecida.
Gracias por confiar en mi, ha sido un placer trabajar para usted y la gente de Miami Beach.
