R-11-19 RESOLUTION APPROVING THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH CODESIGNATION OF 75TH STREET BETWEEN DICKENS AVENUE AND HARDING AVENUE AS "RABBI ABRAMOWITZ WAY" WHEREAS,Rabbi Mayer Abramowitz,known as"Sunshine"for his positive energy and spirit, was a central figure to the Miami Cuban Jewish community; and WHEREAS, Rabbi Abramowitz opened the doors to the synagogue he led, Temple Menorah in Miami Beach, to hundreds of Cuban Jewish youth who came to the United States as part of Operation Pedro Pan from 1960 to 1962, and, through the years, ministered to countless members of the community who were drawn to his warm,welcoming ways; and WHEREAS,years earlier,on December 13, 1919,Rabbi Abramowitz was born in the old city of Jerusalem, and came to New York in 1928; and WHEREAS, while in New York, he earned his bachelor's degree at Yeshiva University in 1941 and then was ordained as a rabbi at the Jewish Theological Seminary in 1944;and WHEREAS, during World War 11, Rabbi Abramowitz enlisted in the U.S. Army after learning about displaced survivors, serving as a chaplain and first lieutenant in Europe;and WHEREAS, while at a displaced persons camp in Berlin known as Schlachtensee- Templhof,he met his future wife,Rachel,a Holocaust survivor; and WHEREAS,after marrying,Rabbi Abramowitz continued his efforts to help thousands of Holocaust survivors rebuild their lives,training many to become teachers and establishing a school and summer camp for more than 2,500 children in Europe; and Agenda Item No. 3(A)(2) Page No. 2 WHEREAS,Rabbi Abramowitz was also active in the Bricha,the underground effort that helped Holocaust survivors escape from Europe to Palestine after World War II; and WHEREAS, following his military service, Rabbi Abramowitz became the chief emigration officer for the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee based in Italy,a position he occupied for three years; and WHEREAS, in 1951,Rabbi Abramowitz and his wife moved to Miami Beach,where he became rabbi at Temple Menorah,where he served for 45 years; and WHEREAS, after retirement, he created the Jewish Leadership Institute, a program that allows college students to travel to Israel to help them develop strong Jewish identities; and WHEREAS, in February 2017,Rabbi Abramowitz passed away at the age of 97;and WHEREAS, on November 14, 2018, the City of Miami Beach adopted Resolution No. 2018-30606,which codesignated that portion of 75th Street between Dickens Avenue and Harding Avenue as"Rabbi Abramowitz Way";and WHEREAS, a copy of Resolution No. 2018-30606 is attached hereto and incorporated herein by reference;and WHEREAS, 75th Street between Dickens Avenue and Harding Avenue is a city street located in the City of Miami Beach; and WHEREAS, the City of Miami Beach would now like for the County to install signage indicating this codesignation on County street signs and traffic signal masts arms; and WHEREAS,this codesignation is located in County Commission District 4; and WHEREAS,this Board would like to approve this codesignation, Agenda Item No. 3(A)(2) Page No. 3 NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS OF MIAMI-DADE COUNTY,FLORIDA,that this Board: Section 1. Approves the codesignation by the City of Miami Beach of 75th Street between Dickens Avenue and Harding Avenue as"Rabbi Abramowitz Way". Section 2. Directs the Clerk of the Board to send certified copies of this Resolution to the Mayor and City Commission of the City of Miami Beach,the United States Postal Service,the Traffic Signals and Signs Division of the Miami-Dade County Transportation and Public Works Department, the Development Services Division of the Miami-Dade County Regulatory and Economic Resources Department, the City of Miami Beach Police Department, and the City of Miami Beach Fire Rescue Department. The Prime Sponsor of the foregoing resolution is Commissioner Sally A. Heyman. It was offered by Commissioner Rebeca Sosa ,who moved its adoption. The motion was seconded by Commissioner Dennis C.
