LTC 134-2003 CITY of MIAMI BEACH Office of the City Manager Letter to Commission TO: FROM: SUBJECT: Mayor David Dermer and Members of the City Commission Jorge M. Gonzalez City Manager WEEKLY UPDATE Date: June 6, 2003 The purpose of this LTC is to provide the Mayor and Commission with an update describing some of the areas the administration focused on during the week of June 2, 2003: Neighborhood Leadership Academy - The Fire Department presented an overview of their responsibilities and services to academy participants on June 2. The participant's surveys, completed at the end of each session, will be compiled and shared with each department. A final report, including a summary of all three Neighborhood Leadership academies, will be presented to the Mayor and Commission. Ali-America City Award - Members of the administration continue finalizing logistical and presentation details as well as seeking sponsors for the upcoming Ali-America City Award presentation in Washington, D.C. The City will send a delegation comprised of staff representatives and community and business activists to participate in the final round of the competition in Washington, D.C. from June 12-14, 2003. Modes of Rapid Transit Options - The Consultant, HDR Engineering, Inc., is preparing to host a follow-up public information workshop on June 9, beginning at 6:00 p.m. in the Miami Beach Convention Center, Board Room D237-239. The workshop, discussing modes of rapid transit options, provided an opportunity to review evaluations and results from a recent Modes of Transit study while affording the public with a forum to express their perspective and receive answers to their concerns. A special Commission meeting to vote on the proposal has also been scheduled for July 10, beginning at 5:00 p.m. in the Commission Chambers. Charter Review Board - A public meeting was held on June 3 to address the renewal of the City's charter. Further information, and agenda minutes, can be found on the City's internet under E-Government, Boards and Committees. The next meeting is scheduled to take place June 10, beginning at 4:30 p.m. in the Mayor's Conference Room. Ethics Training Seminar - Members of the administration hosted a Miami-Dade County Commission on Ethics training seminar on June 2. The seminar, led by the County's Robert Meyers, focused on strengthening ethical practices citywide. A second meeting, for those not able to previously attend, took place on June 9. Handbills and Flyers Proposed Ordinance - Members of the administration, alongside representatives from the Nightlife Industry Task Force, hosted a meeting on June 3 to discuss a proposed handbills and flyers ordinance. The publicly advertised meeting afforded members of the community with a forum to express their perspective on the ordinance which seeks to better describe what constitutes a handbill and clarify enforcement regulations. North Beach MiMo Architecture Multimedia/Web Design Competition - In an effort to enhance promotion and information dissemination efforts in North Beach, the City is sponsoring a multimedia presentation/web design competition. Students from various design and art schools and similar programs are encouraged to produce and submit a creative and cutting edge multimedia presentation best which best educates the public on the North Beach area and its renowned Miami Modern (MiMo) architecture. Applications are currently available on the City's website, under "What's New." Landlord and Tenant Workshop - Representatives from the administration are preparing to host a public information workshop on June 9 to discuss landlord and tenant conflict resolution. The mini workshop, in conjunction with the Legal Services of Greater Miami, Inc., will address landlord and tenant rights, responsibilities and where to seek assistance. The workshop is scheduled to begin at 6:30 p.m. in the First Floor Conference Room. Rehabilitation of Historic Properties - Members of the administration are preparing to host a public meeting on June 13, beginning at 8:30 a.m. in the City Manager's Large Conference Room, detailing the various financial incentives available for the rehabilitation of historically significant properties. Middle Beach Neighborhood Meeting Representatives from the administration and the Police Department are preparing to host a community meeting on June 16 to address various Middle Beach neighborhood issues. The meeting, beginning at 6:30 p.m. in the Nautilus Middle School Cafeteria, will provide residents with a forum to express their concerns as well as receive input from various city departments.
