A RESOLUTION OF THE MAYOR AND CITY COMMISSION OF
THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA, URGING THE
FLORIDA DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION (FDOT) TO
INSTALL A NEW CROSSWALK AT THE INTERSECTION OF SR
112/41ST STREET/ARTHUR GODFREY ROAD AND
JEFFERSON AVENUE TO IMPROVE PEDESTRIAN SAFETY, IN
LIGHT OF A RECENT ACCIDENT INVOLVING A NAUTILUS
MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENT WHO WAS STRUCK BY A
VEHICLE WHILE CROSSING 41ST STREET.
WHEREAS, SR 112/41st Street/Arthur Godfrey Road is under the jurisdiction of the
Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT); and
WHEREAS, the lack of marked pedestrian crossings at the intersection of SR
112/41st Street/Arthur Godfrey Road and Jefferson Avenue has been a recurring safety
concern for some time; and
WHEREAS, there have been various accidents at this intersection, including four
pedestrians hit and injured over the last ten years. Two of the injured pedestrians were
under 14 years old; and
WHEREAS, the demand to cross 41st Street at Jefferson Avenue has increased in
the last few years as a result of new businesses and the new after-school enrichment
program attended by.approximately 600 Nautilus Middle School students; and
WHEREAS, the City's Committee for Quality Education passed a motion on January
22, 2019 urging the City to work with FDOT to implement a safe pedestrian crossing at the
intersection of 41st Street and Jefferson Avenue; and
WHEREAS, the Nautilus Middle School Parent-Teacher-Student.Association sent a
letter to Mayor Gelber regarding the need to improve pedestrian safety by way of a
pedestrian crossing at this intersection; and
WHEREAS, the City Commission adopted Resolution No. 2019-30685 on January
16, 2019 accepting the 41st Street Design and Vision Plan to implement a new vision for
the 41st Street Corridor, which was developed in coordination with community stakeholders
and includes a recurring theme to improve pedestrian safety and comfort along 41st Street;
and
WHEREAS, adding a crosswalk at this intersection would be a step toward achieving
this vision; and
WHEREAS, City Manager Jimmy Morales sent a letter dated February 1, 2019 to
FDOT District Secretary Jim Wolfe requesting that FDOT explore ways to improve

pedestrian safety, including installation of a new crosswalk, at the intersection of 41st Street
and Jefferson Avenue, and transmitting copies of the motion passed by the Committee for
Quality Education and the letter from the Nautilus Middle School Parent-Teacher-Student
Association; and
WHEREAS, on February 13, 2019, the Miami Beach City Commission discussed
the seriousness of the recurring safety concerns at this intersection and the City's
dedication to the implementation of the subject crosswalk by FDOT.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT DULY RESOLVED BY THE MAYOR AND THE CITY
COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA that the Mayor and City
Commission hereby urge the Florida Department of Transportation to expeditiously install
a new crosswalk at the intersection of State Road 112/41st Street/Arthur Godfrey Road and
Jefferson Avenue to improve pedestrian safety and avoid further accidents involving
pedestrians.

2. No aggressive and obvious marijuana signage on the front and back windows and doors
of these dispensaries.
