2003-25255 ResoRESOLUTION NO. 2003-252-5~ A RESOLUTION OF THE MAYOR AND CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA, PROCLAIMING JULY 13 THROUGH JULY 19, 2003, AS "NATIONAL AQUATIC WEEK" IN RECOGNITION AND SUPPORT OF THE NATIONAL RECREATION AND PARKS ASSOCIATION'S EFFORTS TO PROMOTE A GREATER AWARENESS OF THE HEALTH, SAFETY AND LIFE LONG LEISURE BENEFITS OF PARTICIPATING IN AQUATICS PROGRAMS; WHEREAS, individuals and organized forms of recreation and the creative use of free time are vital to the happy lives of all our citizens: and education, athletic and recreation programs throughout the City of Miami Beach encompass a multitude of activities that can result in personal accomplishment, self satisfaction and family unity for citizens, regardless of their background, ability level or age; and WHEREAS, citizens of the City of Miami Beach should recognize the vital role that swimming and aquatic-related activities relate to good physical and mental health and enhance the quality of life for all people; and WHEREAS, the City of Miami Beach is extremely proud of the swimming facilities and aquatic programs offered to our community and their contributions to providing to all ages a healthy place to recreate, a place to learn and grow, to swim, build self-esteem, confidence and sense of self- worth which contributes to the quality of life in our community. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT DULY RESOLVED THAT THE MAYOR AND CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH hereby proclaim July 13th through 19th, 2003, as "National Aquatic Week" in recognition and support of the National Recreation and Parks Association's efforts to promote a greater awareness of the health, safety and life long leisure benefits of participating in aquatics programs. Issue: On April 25, 2003, the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA) National Aquatic Branch announced the designation of July 13 through July 19, 2003 as National Aquatic Week. The Parks and Recreation Department is very active in providing aquatics related programs and services to our patrons and continues to regularly provide learn-to-swim programs as part of its summer programs, as well as offers water safety and other aquatic programming for the community throughout the year. It is anticipated that approximately 1,000 youths will receive leam. Co-swim lessons and be issued the appropriate level of Red Cross certification this summer alone. Adopting this Resolution demonstrates the City's support to the National Recreation and Parks Association's recognition of "National Aquatic Week" and the commitment to our residents in establishing and continuing such programs in the future. ANALYSIS: On April 25, 2003, the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA) National Aquatic Branch announced the designation of July 13 - July 19, 2003 as "National Aquatic Week". The Parks and Recreation Department is very active in providing aquatics related programs and services to our patrons at the newly constructed Flamingo Park Pool and the Scott Rakow Youth Center pool. Additionally, The Parks and Recreation Department will open the Normandy Isle Pool Complex to th(~ public in the fall of 2003. The City's new Flamingo swim complex complete with both an 8 lane lap pool and interactive playground has been extremely well received by our customers and we anticipate the same positive reaction at Normandy Isle Pool Complex, which will include a 4 lane swim pool and an interactive pool/water playground when it opens. The Parks and Recreation Department continues to regularly provide learn-to-swim programs as part of its summer programs, as well as offers water safety and other aquatic programming for the community throughout the year. It is anticipated that approximately 1,000 youths will receive learn-to-swim lessons and be issued the appropriate level of Red Cross certification this summer alone.
