A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY
OF MIAMI BEACH TO REQUEST THAT THE FLORIDA
PUBLIC SERVICE COMMISSION HOLD AN EMERGENCY
HEARING TO CONSIDER THE REDUCTION OF FLORIDA
POWER AND LIGHT RATES AND TO FURTHER REQUEST
THAT THE MAYOR OF THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH OR H I S
REPRESENTATIVE BE PERMITTED TO PRESENT THE
POSITION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH AT THE NEXT
PUBLIC HEARING OF THE FLORIDA PUBLIC SERVICE
COMMISSION CONCERNING FLORIDA POWER AND LIGHT
RATES.
WHEREAS, current Florida Power and Light rates are based
on an assumed increases in O.P.E.C. prices; and
WHEREAS, there has been a recent reduction in OPEC oil
prices; and
WHEREAS, utilities are a major expense for the citizens of
the City of Miami Beach, many of whom exist on limited incomes; and
WHEREAS, excessive utility rates are detrimental to the
life and health of the citizens of Miami Beach; and
WHEREAS, it is the duty of the City Commission of the City
of Miami Beach to protect and improve the life and health of its
citizens; and
WHEREAS, it is the duty of the Florida Public Service Com-
mission to protect the citizens of Florida from excessive utilities
rates by insuring that such rates bear a reasonable relationship to
the cost of producing such utilities;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT DULY RESOLVED BY THE CITY COMMISSION
OF THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA, that the Florida Public Service
Commission hold an emergency hearing to consider the reduction of
Florida Power and Light rates;
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the City Commission of the
City of Miami Beach requests that the Mayor of the City of Miami
Beach or his representative be permitted to present the position of
the City of Miami Beach at the next public hearing of the Florida
Public Service Commission concerning Florida Power and Light rates.
