A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COMMISSION OF THE
CITY OF MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA, RECOMMENDING
THAT A PROPOSED QUESTION ON THE ISSUE OF
STATE-CONTROLLED CASINO GAMBLING WITHIN THE
CITY OF MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA, BE SUBMITTED TO
THE ELECTORS OF THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH AT A
SPECIAL ELECTION TO BE HELD ON MARCH 13 ,
1984 .
WHEREAS , the issue of legalized casino gambling in Miami
Beach has been evocative of great public interest and has been the
subject matter of considerable debate, and has occupied
considerable attention of the news media, and
WHEREAS , casino gambling is illegal under the State of
Florida Constitution, and
WHEREAS , the Charter of the State of Florida requires a
State-wide referendum, whereby the ultimate decision upon said
issue rests with the people of the State of Florida, and
WHEREAS , it is a traditional and basic principle of
American democracy that issues affecting the public should be
submitted to its decision at open and fair elections affording the
citizens of Miami Beach the opportunity to express their feelings
regarding this issue, and
WHEREAS , the elected officials of the City of Miami
Beach would find it beneficial to receive direction based upon the
results of expression of the citizens of Miami Beach;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COMMISSION OF
THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA that a proposed question on the
issue of state-controlled casino gambling within the City of Miami
Beach, Florida be submitted to the electors of the City of Miami
Beach at a special election to be held on March 13 , 1984 .
PASSED and ADOPTED this 5th day of October r 1983.
