A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COMMISSION OF THE
CITY OF MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA, RECOMMENDING
AND URGING THE HOUSING AUTHORITY OF THE CITY
OF MIAMI BEACH TO SUPPORT THE CONVERSION OF
FUNDS FROM NEW CONSTRUCTION TO SECTION 8
CERTIFICATES AND/OR ACQUISITION AND REHABILI-
TATION.
WHEREAS, the Housing Authority of the City of Miami
Beach has elected to construct sixty units of family public
housing on Normandy Isle; and
WHEREAS, the City of Miami Beach in the midst of its
tourist season has an average vacancy rate of approximately
sixteen percent; and
WHEREAS, the need for family housing is better served
through the utilization of the City' s existing housing stock
rather than through new construction; and
WHEREAS , HUD is presently examining other alternatives
which would utilize the City of Miami Beach present housing stock;
and
WHEREAS , potential alternatives identified are Section 8
existing certificates and/or acquisition and rehabilitation; and
WHEREAS, the implementation of the above alternatives
would be preferable to new construction of public family housing
since they would confront the huge vacancy factor reflected above;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COMMISSION OF
THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH, that the City Commission recommends and
urges the Housing Authority of the City of Miami Beach to support
the conversion of funds from new construction to Section 8
certificates and/or acquisition and rehabilitation.
