A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COMMISSION OF THE
CITY OF MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA, URGING THE
METRO-DADE COUNTY COMMISSION TO EXPAND THE
JAIL FACILITIES IN DADE COUNTY IN THE AREAS
ALREADY CONTEMPLATED BY METROPOLITAN DADE
COUNTY TO THE WEST OF THE AIRPORT, AND
SUPPORTING THEM IN ALL EFFORTS WHICH WILL
MAKE THE EXPANSION A REALITY IN THE NEAR
FUTURE.
WHEREAS, the City Commission of the City of Miami
Beach is aware of the severe overcrowding in the existing Dade
County jail facilities; and
WHEREAS, the overcrowding results in the releasing,
without jail time, of misdemeanants who have committed crimes
that are considered serious by citizens; and
WHEREAS, expanded jail facilities would enable judges
to sentence misdemeanants to serve time and thereby relieve
citizens of concern regarding the furtherance of crime on the
streets:
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT DULY RESOLVED BY THE CITY COM-
MISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA that the City of
Miami Beach urges the Metro-Dade County Commission to expand the
jail facilities in Dade County in the areas already contemplated
by Metropolitan Dade County to the west of the airport, and
supports them in all efforts which will make the expansion a
reality in the near future.
