A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COMMISSION OF THE
CITY OF MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA, URGING THE
DADE COUNTY COMMISSION TO ADOPT A HANDGUN
MANAGEMENT ORDINANCE AND THE DADE COUNTY
SCHOOL BOARD TO ENFORCE UNIFORM REGULATIONS
PROHIBITING THE POSSESSION, DISTRIBUTION AND
DISPLAY OF HANDGUNS IN DADE COUNTY PUBLIC
SCHOOLS.
WHEREAS, there has been a tremendous increase in the
number of handguns students are bringing to public schools which
create an inherently dangerous and volatile situation; and
WHEREAS , the Dade County School Board has promulgated
"Procedures for Promoting and Maintaining a Safe Learning
Environment" , including Guideline #20 : "Possession and/or Use of
Weapons or Firearms" ; and
WHEREAS , The City Commission of the City of Miami Beach
wishes to ensure that the aforesaid Dade County School Board rule
is strictly enforced in the City of Miami Beach and throughout the
Dade County public school system.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED THAT THE CITY COMMISSION
OF THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA:
1. The City Commission of the City of Miami Beach
hereby endorses the promulgation of uniform regulations
prohibiting the possession, distribution and display of handguns
in Dade County public schools and urge the strict enforcement of
Dade County School Board Guideline #20 relating to weapons or
firearms in an effort to provide a safe and healty environment in
public schools throughout Dade County.
2 . The City Clerk is hereby directed to send copies of
this Resolution to each member of the Metropolitian Dade County
Commission and each member of the Metropolitan Dade County School
Board.
