RESOLUTION 85-18228 RESOLUTION NO. 85- 18228 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH ENDORSING MAYOR FROMBERG' S OPPOSITION TO A STATE PARK AND REQUESTING AND URGING THE GOVERNOR AND THE CABINET OF THE STATE OF FLORIDA TO IMMEDIATELY WITHDRAW FROM THE COURSE OF ACTION ON WHICH THEY HAVE EMBARKED TO PURCHASE THE CHEEZEM PROPERTY IN SOUTH POINTE, MIAMI BEACH, FOR USE AS A STATE PARK. WHEREAS, the Cheezem development in South Pointe is a cornerstone for the complete revitalization of the entire southern tip of Miami Beach; and WHEREAS, construction scheduled to commence this week has been effectively disrupted by the State ' s plan to purchase of the Cheezem property; and WHEREAS , such State purchase is a senseless act which would cause economic repercussions which are potentially devastating to this community which is successfully struggling back from adversity to reverse more than a decade of decline; and WHEREAS, this State action would ultimately deny Miami Beach more than $5 million each year in vitally needed tax revenues from this project alone ; and WHEREAS, other developers who have been actively purchasing sites throughout the South Pointe area also view the Cheezem project as a cornerstone to their own development plans, and their plans would be adversely affected by this action; and WHEREAS, predicated largely upon this project work has already commenced on almost $10 million in public water and sewer improvements to prepare the area for new construction; and WHEREAS, the City has entered into negotiations with the purchasers of the Cook Inlet property to complement the Cheezem development with commercial and retail development and such negotiations will be jeopardized by the State action; and WHEREAS , thousands of hours of hard work by this City Commission and others in encouraging a developer to proceed with the revitalization of the South Pointe area will be jeopardized by the State ' s action, NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COMMISSION OF OFFICE OF THE CITY ATTORNEY-1700 CONVENTION CENTER DRIVE -MIAMI BEACH,FLORIDA 33139 THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH that the Governor and the Cabinet immediately be urged to withdraw from the course of action on which they have embarked and to discontinue all efforts to purchase the Cheezem property in South Pointe, Miami Beach, for use as a state park.
