A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COMMISSION OF THE
CITY OF MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA, APPROVING IN
CONCEPT THE BUILDING OF A TRAFFIC CIRCLE AT
THE INTERSECTION OF DADE BOULEVARD AND
MERIDIAN AVENUE, CREATING AN ENTRANCEWAY TO
THE MIAMI BEACH HOLOCAUST MEMORIAL AND MIAMI
BEACH CONVENTION CENTER, AND DIRECTING THE
CITY ADMINISTRATION TO REQUEST THAT THE STATE,
COUNTY AND OTHER NECESSARY AUTHORITIES APPROVE
AND IMPLEMENT SAID PROJECT.
WHEREAS, the City Commission wishes to enhance the beauty of
the area adjoining the Miami Beach Holocaust Memorial and to
improve the flow of traffic to the Miami Beach Holocaust Memorial
and Miami Beach Convention Center; and
WHEREAS, construction of a traffic circle with landscaping
surrounding a central fountain similar to the one on Granada
Avenue in Coral Gables and located at the intersection of Dade
Boulevard and Meridian Avenue in Miami Beach would create a focal
point and a major entrance way to the Miami Beach Holocaust
Memorial and to the Miami Beach Convention Center; and
WHEREAS, by utilizing land presently a part of the golf
course, said traffic circle could be constructed without extensive
changes in the existing bridge and streets; and
WHEREAS , the preliminary architectural and landscaping design
will be performed by Kenneth Treister and preliminary engineering
design will be performed by John Pistorino without charge and all
out-of-pocket costs for detailed work drawings and feasibility
studies will be billed at cost; and
WHEREAS, the Miami Beach Holocaust Memorial Committee has
requested that the City Commission approve in concept the
construction of said traffic circle; and
WHEREAS, designers Triester and Pistorino have requested that
the City Administration be directed to request that the state,
county and other necessary authorities approve and implement said
construction.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED THAT THE CITY COMMISSION OF
THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA approves in concept the
construction of a traffic circle at the intersection of Dade
Boulevard and Meridian Avenue in Miami Beach creating an entrance-
way to the Miami Beach Holocaust Memorial and Miami Beach
Convention Center and directs the City Administration to request
that the state, county and other necessary authorities approve and
implement said construction.
