RESOLUTION 87-18785 RESOLUTION NO. 87-18785 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH , FLORIDA , SUPPORTING THE NOMINATION OF JORGE ROBLEJO LORIE TO RECEIVE THE 1988 NOBEL PEACE PRIZE. WHEREAS , Congressman Claude Pepper will announce the candidacy of Jorge Roblejo Lorie for the Nobel Peace Prize for his twenty-three years of work in favor of human rights in Cuba, the Reunification of Cuban families and the freedom of Cuban Political Prisoners; and WHEREAS, in 1964, Jorge Roblejo Lorie founded the Committee of the Family of the Hundred in Miami together with other Cuban Immigrants, with the objective to fight for Human Rights in Cuba; and WHEREAS , from 1966 to the present , he has traveled throughout Latin America, Europe and the Caribbean soliciting help for his civic and Christian Crusade in favor of Cuban political prisoners ; and WHEREAS , in 1982 , as a special invitation from General Secretary Alejandro Orfila, he met with Pope John Paul II at the organization of American States, where Jorge Roblejo Lorie gave his Holiness a document about Cuban Political Prisoners and Human Rights; and WHEREAS, a year later he again met with Pope John Paul II in Costa Rica, this time to solicit that the Pope visit Cuba and bring his message to help alleviate the suffering of Cuban families; and WHEREAS, in 1978 , he was able to help in the liberation of hundreds of political prisoners from Cuban jails, bringing them to Miami in special flights coordinated by the Department of State, Cuban authorities and the Committee of The Family of the Hundred; and WHEREAS , the same day, hundreds of ex-political prisoners will sign a document and send it to the Nobel Institute in Oslo, Norway, asking for Jorge Roblejo Lorie ' s nomination for the 1988 Nobel Peace Prize; and WHEREAS, Jorge Roblejo Lorie will be nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize on Sunday, the fifteenth day of March of the year 1987 ; and WHEREAS, Jorge Roblejo Lorie has, for the past twenty-three years, fought in favor of human rights , the reunification of families and the freedom of political prisoners in his native Cuba; and WHEREAS , on this fifteenth day of March, not only will Congressman Claude Pepper send an official document to the Nobel Institute in Oslo, Norway, but hundreds of Cuban ex-political prisoners will sign a similar document requesting that Jorge Roblejo Lorie be considered for the 1988 Nobel Peace Prize. NOW THEREFORE, BE IT DULY RESOLVED BY THE CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA supporting the nomination of Jorge Roblejo Lori to receive the 1988 Nobel Peace Prize.
