Resolution 2019-30847 RESOLUTION NO. 2019-30847 A RESOLUTION OF THE MAYOR AND CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA, APPROVING AND AUTHORIZING THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH TO ACCEPT A DONATION FROM TERRANOVA CORPORATION, WITH A TOTAL APPROXIMATE VALUE OF $10,000.00, FOR 500 ORCHIDS, WHICH DONATION SHALL INCLUDE THOSE COSTS ASSOCIATED WITH TERRANOVA CORPORATION PLANTING THE ORCHIDS ON LINCOLN ROAD IN COLLABORATION WITH THE FAIRCHILD TROPICAL GARDENS. WHEREAS, the Million Orchid Project, facilitated by the Fairchild Tropical Gardens, seeks to re-introduce millions of highly endangered Florida native orchids into urban areas throughout Miami-Dade County; and WHEREAS, on September 2015, the City of Miami Beach (the "City") adopted Resolution No. 2015-29135, which approved the funding for the City to participate in the Million Orchid Project, with the installation divided into three (3) years with phases in each year to allow for successful planting; and WHEREAS, on April 29, 2019, the City has been generously offered a donation from Terranova Corporation, with a total approximate value of $10,000.00, for 500 orchids, and costs associated with Terranova Corporation planting the orchids; and WHEREAS, Terranova Corporation will partner with both the City and the Fairchild Tropical Gardens to ensure successful planting and maintenance of the orchids; and WHEREAS, the orchids will be planted in green spaces and existing gardens on Lincoln Road, from Meridian Avenue to Jefferson Avenue; and WHEREAS, the City Administration recommends that the City Commission approve and authorize the City's acceptance of the aforestated donation. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT DULY RESOLVED BY THE MAYOR AND CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA, approve and authorize the City of Miami Beach to accept a donation from Terranova Corporation, with a total approximate value of $10,000.00, for 500 orchids, which donation shall include those costs associated with Terranova Corporation planting the orchids on Lincoln Road in collaboration with the Fairchild Tropical Gardens.. ANALYSIS Through the Million Orchid Project and National Orchid Garden, Fairchild has been transforming landscapes in Miami and illustrating the great potential of private business and botanic garden partnerships to enhance public spaces. Terranova Corporation, would like to donate approximately $10,000.00 worth of 500 native orchids, planting and maintenance. This donation is to be located on Lincoln Road from Meridian Avenue to Jefferson Avenue. The City and Terranova Corporation, will be establish a plan for the fertilization, monthly services, and periodic health checks to avoid any pests, or plant disease for the donated orchids. Terranova will ensure the maintenance of the orchids for the first year, the City will absorb this responsibility after the first year. This donation is intended as a pilot program to continue transforming Lincoln Road and its urban landscape while helping restore endangered native orchid species. CONCLUSION The Administration recommends that the Mayor and City Commission of the City Of Miami Beach, Florida, approve and authorize the City Of Miami Beach to accept a donation from Terranova Corporation, in the approximate value of$10,000.00, which includes 500 native orchids, planting, and maintenance with the collaboration of Fairchild Tropical Botanical Garden, on Lincoln Road from Meridian Avenue to Jefferson Avenue, and authorizing the City Manager, or his designee, to accept Page 426 of 868 the donation. FINANCIAL INFORMATION Legislative Tracking Property Management ATTACHMENTS: Description ❑ Terranova Proposal ❑ Resolution Page 427 of 868 Lincoln Road Orchid Garden Proposal The purpose of this proposal is to evolve the green spaces along Lincoln Road by installing thousands of orchids on the trees between Meridian and Jefferson Avenues.Through The Million Orchid Project and National Orchid Garden, Fairchild has been transforming landscapes in Miami and illustrating the great potential of private business and botanic garden partnerships to enhance public spaces.As experts in the field we have knowledge to access the best sources of planting materials and experienced persons to see to the establishment of the plants. This proposal gives a brief overview of our recommendations. Recommendations: A.Establish Irrigation System I. Irrigation inspection should include inspection of sprinkler heads,timer mechanisms at each zone.In addition,the system should be inspected visually for hot spots and line breaks. 2. Repairs for items such as head replacement,broken lines,pumps or timers will be need to be performed before plant procurements and installations,and with coordination of the client,City of Miami Beach,Fairchild Garden staff,ect. 3. Long term maintenance agreement to ensure proper performance of irrigation systems. B. Procurement of Orchids and Installations 1. Orchids will be selected by Fairchild Orchid Biologist from varieties best suited to the seasonal and environmental conditions,and their aesthetic appeal. 2. Plants will be sourced at wholesale or below retail prices from international and domestic commercial orchid suppliers. 3. Orchids will be permanently attached on each palm and hardwood tree of suitable size and with an irrigation line established(approx.60 trees total and 500-1000 orchids).Orchids will be installed out of the reach of the public using wire framing and plastic zip ties. C. Long-term Maintenance Needs 1. Fertilizing is required as recommend by the orchid biologist to maintain healthy plants and prolong flowering. 2. Monthly service is recommended to prune,remove flowers that are fading or dead" to prolong blooming time and to improve the general health and appearance of the plants. 3. Periodic Heath Checks as recommend by the orchid biologist to diagnose any sign of insect pests and/or plant diseases.
