SUBJECT: Simon Bolivar y Las Americas Day at Collins Park
The purpose of this LTC is to notify the Mayor and City Commission of the upcoming
Simon Bolivar y Las Americas Day event hosted by the Parks and Recreation Department
in conjunction with the Hispanic Affairs Committee. The event will take place on July 22,
2019 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. in Collins Park (21 51 Street and Collins Avenue) next to the
Simon Bolivar Monument.
Widely celebrate'd throughout Latin America, the ceremony to commemorate Simon
Bolivar's birthday pays tribute to El Libertador Bolivar for leading nations in their
independence from Spain.
Inspired by the American Revolutionary War, his courageous efforts set forward the
creation of several countries, including Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, Panama, Peru and
Venezuela.
The Miami Beach Color Guard will open the ceremony, followed by an invocation from
Father Alberto Cutie, and .the laying of the wreath by the Office of the Mayor and
Commission. Other notable speakers will also partake in the festivities. A portion of the
ceremony will recognize the current plight of the people of Venezuela and their fight for
liberation. Complimentary cafecito and pastries will be served beginning at 10 a.m.
