RESOLUTION 89-19721 RESOLUTION NO. 89-19721 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA, CALLING FOR THE MOVING OF THE CARMELITE CONVENT FROM THE SITE OF THE FORMER AUSCHWITZ CONCENTRATION CAMP AS SOON AS POSSIBLE AND CALLING UPON ALL MANKIND TO PUT ASIDE BIGOTRY AND HATRED AND UNITE IN MUTUAL RESPECT AND HARMONY SO THAT THE HOLOCAUST WILL NEVER AGAIN BE REPEATED. WHEREAS, the Holocaust which occured during World War II was the worst tragedy in human history, with six million Jews exterminated during that time, and WHEREAS, Auschwitz was a Concentration Camp in which over two million Jews were destroyed and is a memorial and final resting place for those souls, and WHEREAS, an Agreement was made in 1987 between Catholic and Jewish leaders to move the convent off of the Auschwitz grounds to a nearby Interfaith Center by February 22 , 1989, which date has long since passed, and WHEREAS, certain prelates of the Catholic Church have refused to honor the Agreement of 1987 , and WHEREAS, the construction and continuation of the Carmelite Convent at the site of the former Auschwitz Concentration Camp grounds is contrary to the Agreement and to the memory of those martyred Jews; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT DULY RESOLVED BY THE CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA, that the City Commission hereby calls for the honoring of the Agreement by the moving of the Carmelite Convent from the site of the former Auschwitz Concentration Camp as soon as possible, so that the sanctity of martyred Jews will be maintained as we commemorate the 50th anniversary of the beginning of World War I I, on September 1, 1939 ; and that the City Commission calls upon all mankind to learn the bitter lessons of that painful event by putting aside bigotry and hatred and uniting in a spirit of mutual respect and harmony, so that such an awful event never again be repeated.
