A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY
OF MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA, URGING THE LEGISLATURE
OF THE STATE OF FLORIDA TO AMEND FLORIDA
STATUTE SECTION 509.215 TO REQUIRE THAT HOTELS
BE EQUIPPED WITH APPROVED INTERIOR SPRINKLER
SYSTEMS FOR COMBATTING FIRES BY JANUARY 1,
1991.
WHEREAS, Florida Statute Section 509 . 215 requires that public
lodging establishments (hotels) be equipped with interior sprinkler
systems approved by the Division of State Fire Marshall by October
1, 1991; and
WHEREAS, on April 6, 1990 a terrible fire at the Fontana Hotel
on Miami Beach resulted in the tragic loss of nine lives,
necessitated medical treatment of more than twenty other
individuals and caused numerous persons to be homeless and deprived
of their personal possessions; and
WHEREAS, on the date of the tragic fire at the Fontana Hotel
the Hotel was not equipped with an interior sprinkler system for
combatting fires; and
WHEREAS, City of Miami Beach Fire Chief Braniard Dorris has
stated that installation of an approved interior sprinkler system
would have prevented the Fontana tragedy and can prevent future
tragedies caused by fires at other hotels on Miami Beach, many of
which are currently operating without interior fire sprinkler
systems; and
WHEREAS, the City Commission believes that the potential for
future fire disasters at Miami Beach hotels may be greatly reduced
if the Florida Legislature amends Florida Statute Section 509 . 215
to require that hotels be equipped with approved interior sprinkler
systems for combatting fires by January 1, 1991.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT DULY RESOLVED BY THE CITY COMMISSION OF
THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA, that the City Commission urges
the Legislature of the State of Florida to amend Florida Statute
