A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI
BEACH, URGING COMMUNITY SUPPORT THROUGH THE CHAMBERS OF
COMMERCE AND THE LEAGUE OF CITIES TO BRING ORGANIZED
BASEBALL TO METROPOLITAN DADE COUNTY, FLORIDA
WHEREAS, the Chambers of Commerce, the Dade League of Cities
and the Board of Metropolitan Dade County Commissioners, wish
officially to inform owners of Major League Baseball teams and the
Commissioner of Baseball that the Chambers of Commerce, the members
of the Dade League of Cities, and Metropolitan Dade County desire
to support an expansion franchise for baseball at a site located
in South Florida and especially within the boundaries of
Metropolitan Dade County; and
WHEREAS, the Chambers of Commerce, the members of the Dade
League of Cities and the Board of Metropolitan Dade County have
been enthusiastic supporters for major sports events, including the
Super Bowl, the State of Florida Sunshine State Games, the Breeders
Cup, the Lipton International Tennis Tournament, the Royal
Caribbean Golf Classic (Senior PGA Tournament) , the Miami Dolphins
Professional Football franchise; and
WHEREAS, South Florida long has been part of "The Grapefruit
League" , the spring training home for many major league baseball
teams; and
WHEREAS, the demographics of the chambers of commerce, the
members of the Dade League of Cities, and Metropolitan Dade County
has some two million people within its County boundaries in itself
and where the prime working age is 20 to 44 , includes almost
662 , 000 people, and the population from Broward, Dade and Palm
Beach Counties exceeds 4 . 1 million people; and
WHEREAS, the Chambers of Commerce, the members of the Dade
League of Cities, Metropolitan Dade County plan to support
whichever ownership franchise is approved by Major League Baseball ;
and
WHEREAS, the Chambers of Commerce, the members of the Dade
League of Cities, and Metropolitan Dade County have appropriate
authority to enter into a long-term working agreement with Major
League Baseball and have permissive legislation that will effect
the viability of a franchise relationship in a very positive
manner; and
WHEREAS, the new Club would have available, because of our
cooperative efforts, suitable traffic control, police, airport
facilities and access roads.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT DULY RESOLVED BY THE CITY COMMISSION OF
THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA, that the City of Miami Beach as
a member of the Dade League of Cities, heartily supports the
expansion effort of the National League; and encourages baseball
owners and the Commissioner of Baseball to establish an expansion
franchise within the geographic boundaries of Metropolitan Dade
County, Florida.
