RESOLUTION 90-20128 RESOLUTION NO. 90-20128 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH INSTRUCTING OUR LOBBYIST IN WASHINGTON, SYLVESTER LUKIS TO TAKE ALL NECESSARY ACTIONS TO ENSURE THAT THE CITY IS NOT ENDANGERED BY THE PROPOSED DUMPING OF SEDIMENTS FROM THE MIAMI RIVER INTO THE ATLANTIC OCEAN WHEREAS, the Army Corps of Engineers currently is proposing the dredging of the Miami River bottom; and WHEREAS, the interim designated ocean dumping site is approximately 3 miles off-shore of the City of Miami Beach; and WHEREAS,the dumping or placement of the dredged sediments from the Miami River project could have water quality, fishery, and other environmental and ecological ramifications for not only the Florida coastline, but for the entire eastern seaboard of the United States; and WHEREAS, there has been insufficient scientific studies conducted as to the impact of the dumping of said dredged sediments at the proposed location; and WHEREAS, the dumping of said Miami River project dredged material could have possible catastrophic ramifications on the Miami Beach tourist economy. NOW. THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH THAT: The City Commission of the City of Miami Beach instructs our Lobbyist in Washington, Sylvester Lukis to take all necessary actions to ensure that the City is not endangered by the proposed dumping of sediments from the Miami River into the Atlantic Ocean. This resolution instructs our City Lobbyist, Sylvester Lukis, to take the necessary steps to ensure that the City of Miami Beach is not endangered by this proposed project. ADMINISTRATION RECOMMENDATION The Administration recommends that the City Commission adopt the attached resolution instructing our Lobbyist Sylvester Lukis to take all necessary actions to ensure that the City is not endangered by the proposed dumping of dredged sediments from the Miami River.
