A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COMMISSION OF THE
CITY OF MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA, APPROVING IN
CONCEPT A PLAN TO ENTER INTO INTERLOCAL
AGREEMENTS WITH THE CITIES OF HIALEAH, MIAMI
AND OTHER MUNICIPALITIES IN DADE COUNTY TO
ESTABLISH FUNDS TO BENEFIT FAMILIES OF POLICE
OFFICERS AND FIREFIGHTERS KILLED IN THE LINE
OF DUTY.
WHEREAS, police officers and firefighters are exposed to
overwhelming danger and threat constantly placing them in situations
whereby they risk their lives for the protection of the public; and
WHEREAS, the families of police officers and firefighters
unselfishly accept the possibility that their loved ones may be killed
in the line of duty; and
WHEREAS, the City Commission of the City of Miami Beach recognizes
that police officers and firefighters are killed in the line of duty in
Dade County and leave families including young children; and
WHEREAS, the City Commission wishes to show support for the police
officers and firefighters who serve the City and protect the lives of
its citizens; and
WHEREAS, the City Commission believes that this support can best be
accomplished by entering into interlocal agreements with other
municipalities in Dade County which would provide that when a police
officer or firefighter from one of the cooperating municipalities is
killed in the line of duty, each of the cooperating municipalities will
contribute the sum of ten thousand dollars ($10, 000) to a fund which
would be paid directly to the spouse or other designated beneficiaries
of the deceased police officer or firefighter; and
WHEREAS, Commissioner J.L. Plummer of the City of Miami and Mayor
Julio J. Martinez of the City of Hialeah have indicated that they will
sponsor the interlocal agreements; and
WHEREAS, the City Commission believes that other municipalities in
Dade County will join in this cooperative effort to support the police
officers and firefighters.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT DULY RESOLVED BY THE CITY COMMISSION OF THE
CITY OF MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA, that the City Commission approves in
concept a plan to enter into interlocal agreements with the Cities of
Hialeah, Miami and other municipalities in Dade County to establish
funds to benefit families of police officers and firefighters killed in
the line of duty. This shall be retroactive to include the spouse of
Officer Stafford.
