Resolution 2019-30966 RESOLUTION NO.: 2019-30966 A RESOLUTION OF THE MAYOR AND CITY COMMISSION OF.MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA, APPROVING THE FLORIDA LEGISLATURE'S CO-DESIGNATION OF THE INTERCHANGE AT THE 1-195 AND ALTON ROAD AS "TROOPER OWEN K. BENDER MEMORIAL INTERCHANGE," AND DIRECTING THE CITY CLERK TO TRANSMIT A COPY OF THIS RESOLUTION TO THE SECRETARY OF THE FLORIDA DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION, AND THE MEMBERS OF MIAMI-DADE COUNTY BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS. WHEREAS, during the 2018 regular legislative session, Florida Legislature enacted House Bill 385, which, among other co-designations, co-designated the interchange at 1-195 and Alton Road as "Trooper Owen K. Bender Memorial Interchange"; and WHEREAS, in 1965, Auxiliary Captain Owen K. Bender ("Captain Bender") was struck and killed by a vehicle as he manned a roadblock on the Julia Tuttle Causeway in the aftermath of Hurricane Betsy; and WHEREAS, Captain Bender was a World War II veteran, and has served the residents of Florida with the Florida Highway Patrol Auxiliary for six (6) years; and WHEREAS, the interchange at 1-195 and Alton Road is within the City of Miami Beach; and • WHEREAS, Section 334.071 Fla. Stat., provides that the installation of state road designation signs shall be contingent on the applicable county or city commission passing a resolution in support of the particular honorary road designation; and WHEREAS, as such, prior to the Florida Department of Transportation installing signs reflecting the "Trooper Owen K. Bender Memorial Interchange" co-designation, the City of Miami Beach is required to pass a resolution in support of this road designation. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT DULY RESOLVED BY THE MAYOR AND CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA, that the Mayor and City Commission hereby approve the Florida Legislature's co-designation of the interchange at the 1-195 and Alton Road as "Trooper Owen K. Bender Memorial Interchange," and direct the City Clerk to transmit copy of this Resolution to the Secretary of the Florida Department of Transportation, and the members of Miami-Dade County Board of Commissioners.
