The purpose of this LTC is to inform you that the City of Miami Beach will again be taking part in
National Civic Participation Week, which is intended to showcase American democracy and
encourage civic participation, honor the courageous spirit of the American people, and pay tribute to
those we lost on September 11, 2001. Last year, the U.S. Senate designated National Civic
Participation Week with the passage of S. Res. 140. As you may recall, the City was awarded the
2002 Participate America President's Award for our numerous volunteer efforts which included the
creation of The City of Miami Beach Volunteer Network.
The Neighborhood Services Department developed and is promoting "Participate Miami Beach - A
Week of Service" as our opportunity to participate and support this worthwhile national initiative. In
addition to pledging our support to Participate America, we have also pledged to participate in "One
Day's Pay". "One Day's Pledge", a non-profit public benefit corporation, was founded in 2002 to
honor victims of the September 11 terrorist attacks on America. The idea is to pay tribute to the
victims by encouraging individuals, employees and groups to permanently set aside time each
September 11 to help others in need through service or other giving activities. Our volunteer
activities are listed with these two organizations and the attached schedule represents the events
planned for Miami Beach.
The scheduled events will afford employees and residents the opportunity to volunteer their time by
donating new books for one of our public elementary schools, helping build a home for a needy
family and/or participating in a canal clean-up. I am encouraging my staff to participate at some level
in at least one of the scheduled events. I am sure that you will agree that this is a wonderful
opportunity to showcase the spirit of Miami Beach and our community's commitment to civic
participation.
