LTC 569-2019 Motion by the LGBTQ Advisory Committee MIAMI BEACH City of Miami Beach, 1700 Convention Center Drive, Miami Beach, FL 33139, www.miamibeachfl.gov OFFICE OF THE CITY MANAGER LTC # 569-2019 LETTER TO COMMISSION TO: Mayor Dan Gelber and Memberso the City mmission FROM: Jimmy L. Morales, City Manager DATE: October 24, 2019 SUBJECT: Motion by the LGBTQ Advisory Committee The purpose of this Letter to Commission (LTC) is to inform the Mayor and the Commission of a motion made by the LGBTQ Advisory Committee at their meeting on October 8, 2019. BACKGROUND: The Florida Department of Health, in association with the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, conducts the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) survey. This survey establishes and tracks state and local health objectives, plans for health programs, implement disease prevention and health promotion activities, and monitors trends. A module that states can opt into is the Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity (SO/GI) module. While states like Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Texas, and Vermont have opted into this module, the State of Florida does not currently use it. Thus, the state is missing critical health data for more than three- quarters of a million of its own residents, a population greater than the entire State of Vermont. The committee would like to ensure that critical health data is being collected of all of its residents. MOTION: The consensus of this Committee is to ask the City to petition the Florida Department of Health to adopt the SO/GI module for the BRFSS.
