A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COMMISSION OF THE
CITY OF MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA URGING THE DADE
COUNTY COMMISSION AND ADMINISTRATION TO
MAINTAIN THE CURRENT BUDGET ALLOTTED FOR BEACH
CLEANING AND MAINTENANCE.
WHEREAS, tourism constitutes a very significant part of the
Dade County economy; and
WHEREAS, the City of Miami Beach and other oceanfront
communities and resort areas of Dade County are major contributors
of revenues to Dade County; and
WHEREAS, essential components of the attraction of tourists to
Dade County are the beaches between Government Cut and Bakers
Haulover, including those located within the City of Miami Beach;
and
WHEREAS, the beaches located within the City of Miami Beach
and other communities within Dade County are used by persons
residing throughout Dade County as well as by tourists visiting the
area; and
WHEREAS, Dade County is currently solely responsible for the
maintenance of the public beaches including debris and litter pick-
up; and
WHEREAS, there are proposals to slash by nearly fifty (50%)
percent Dade County' s current budget for beach cleaning which
would, in effect, put an end to this service entirely, to the
extreme detriment of the economy of the City of Miami Beach, the
economies of many other beach-front communities, to unincorporated
Sunny Isles and to Dade County' s general welfare; and
WHEREAS, Dade County is currently involved in negotiations
with the City of Miami Beach to determine the feasibility of an
enterprise fund operation with joint funding and management of the
beaches, including maintenance and cleaning operations.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COMMISSION OF THE
CITY OF MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA:
That the City Commission urges the Dade County Commission and
Administration to maintain the current budget for beach cleaning

and maintenance until such time as feasibility and funding for the
joint operation of the beach is determined; and that the City Clerk
is hereby directed to send copies of this Resolution to the Greater
Miami Convention and Visitors Bureau, City of Surfside, Village of
Bal Harbour, Sunny Isles Resort Association, each member of the
Dade County Commission and appropriate administrative offices of
Dade County.

SUBJECT: RESOLUTION URGING DADE COUNTY TO MAINTAIN THE CURRENT
BEACH CLEANING BUDGET
Mayor Seymour Gelber requested this resolution urging the
Dade County Commission and Administration to maintain its current
beach cleaning budget. The Towns of Surfside and Bal Harbour have
passed similar resolutions and have asked the City of Miami Beach
to join in the effort to defeat a proposal to cut by fifty percent
Dade County's current beach cleaning budget. Dade County currently
provides beach cleaning service to the public beaches located
within the City of Miami Beach and other beachfront communities
located within the County.
