Morales, City Manager DATE: November 18, 2019 SUBJECT: MBPD 7th Successful Re-Accr ditation This Letter to Commission is prepared to announce that the Miami Beach Police Department was awarded its 7th reaccreditation by the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA) on November 16, 2019. This award culminates the four-year cycle of rigorous inspection and evaluation by CALEA to ensure that our Police Department is maintaining the very highest standards of the policing profession. Among the many points of excellence cited by CALEA in its review of the MBPD were the following: The continuing implementation of a body-worn camera program and the leadership the Department is taking in integrating this new technology into the Miami- Dade criminal justice system; the renewed emphasis within the Department to upgrade and increase entry-level, in-service and executive development training; the strength and wisdom of the Department's updated policies on use of force; the Department's new initiatives to improve recruitment and hiring standards; the Department's smart and strategic deployment of technology to further its policing mission; and the reduction in complaints against police officers in the past four years. Receiving reaccreditation demonstrates our Police Department's commitment to professional excellence in both policy and in practice. This reaccreditation represents the culmination of constant ongoing internal self-evaluation and outside, independent reviews performed over four years by CALEA assessors. Additionally, receiving reaccreditation represents the Police Department's acceptance of its ongoing obligation to continue to embrace professional excellence. The City and MBPD have much to be proud of with this award. CALEA accreditation places the MBPD in the top five percent of police departments in the nation in terms of its operation and implementation of best industry practices. It also underscores the Department's commitment to our citywide Service Excellence Program. The official notice of reaccreditation by CALEA is attached. Please join me in recognizing and commending the Miami Beach Police Department for its 7th CALEA reaccreditation award.
