A RESOLUTION OF THE MAYOR AND CITY COMMISSION OF
THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA, APPROVING AND
AUTHORIZING THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH TO ACCEPT THE
IN-KIND DONATION OF THE LA PRAIRIE LIFEGUARD TOWER
FROM MAKAIRA INC.
WHEREAS, on December 5, 2019, the City of Miami Beach hosted Art Basel Miami
Beach, the most comprehensive international contemporary art fair in North America, with over
268 galleries from 35 countries, showcasing works by more than 4,000 artists; and
WHEREAS, Art Basel Miami Beach, which is held annually, brings thousands of
residents and tourists together to enjoy internationally recognized contemporary public art and
art-related events and to engage the community in projects that promote art and culture; and
WHEREAS, La Prairie's Wave installation, by artist Pablo Valbuena, incorporates a
decommissioned Miami Beach lifeguard tower, fully restored for a 2019 Art Basel Miami Beach
debut by Makaira, Inc.; and
WHEREAS, at the conclusion of Art Basel Miami Beach, Makaira, Inc. will donate the
refurbished lifeguard tower to the City of Miami Beach; and
WHEREAS, the Administration recommends that the City Commission approve and
authorize the acceptance of the aforestated in-kind donation.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT DULY RESOLVED BY THE MAYOR AND CITY
COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA, that the Mayor and City
Commission hereby approve and authorize the City of Miami Beach to accept the in-kind
donation of the La Prairie Lifeguard Tower from Makaira, Inc.
PASSED and ADOPTED this 11th day of December 2019.

BACKGROUND/HISTORY
ANALYSIS
On December 5, 2019, the City of Miami Beach hosted Art Basel Miami Beach, the most
comprehensive international contemporary art fair in North America, with over 268 galleries from
35 countries, showcasing works by more than 4,000 artists. Art Basel Miami Beach, which is
held annually, brings thousands of residents and tourists together to enjoy internationally
recognized contemporary public art and art-related events and to engage the community in
projects that promote art and culture. La Prairie's Waveinstallation, by artist Pablo Valbuena,
incorporates a decommissioned Miami Beach lifeguard tower, fully restored for a 2019 Art
Basel Miami Beach debut by Makaira, Inc.At the conclusion of Art Basel Miami Beach, Makaira,
Inc. will donate the refurbished lifeguard tower to the City of Miami Beach.
CONCLUSION
The Administration recommends that the City Commission approve and authorize the
acceptance of the aforestated in-kind donation.
