SUBJECT: The City's First Automated Bic le and Pedestrian Counter
I am pleased to announce the city's first automated bicycle and pedestrian counter has been
installed along the Middle Beach Recreational Corridor, to the north of the 53rd Street beach
entrance. The counter will provide valuable data which the city can use to plan, monitor, and
evaluate existing and future segments of the beachwalk, bayw alk, and other shared-use paths
throughout the city.
This project was made possible through a public-private partnership with the Florida Department
of Transportation (FDOT) and a traffic data solution company, Roadys. The city received a bike
counter donation from Roadys. FDOT installed the counter and will provide ongoing maintenance
for free.
The data from the counter will be used to document the usage of the beachwalk and quantifying
the benefits of non-motorized shared-use paths to users and the built environment. According
to the city's 2017 community-wide greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions inventory, emissions from
the combustion of gasoline and diesel for transportation accounted for 19% of the city's GHG
emissions. Reducing car trips by encouraging the use of other modes of transportation can
significantly reduce the city's carbon footprint. The data provided by the counter will be helpful as
the city explores new grant opportunities at the state and federal level to construct future non-
motorized shared-use paths in the city.
I would like to thank the Environment & Sustainability, Capital Improvement Projects and
Transuon Departments for their collaboration on achieving this great milestone for the city.
