RESOLUTION 93-20778 RESOLUTION NO. 93-20778 A RESOLUTION OF THE MAYOR AND CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA, DIRECTING THE CITY MANAGER AND CITY ATTORNEY TO PURSUE NECESSARY ACTIONS TO RESTRICT, EXCEPT POLICE, FIRE, GARBAGE AND EMERGENCY VEHICLES, MULTI- AXLE VEHICLES IN EXCESS OF FIVE (5) TONS FROM USING THE VENETIAN CAUSEWAY. WHEREAS, the Venetian Causeway is an important historic landmark, having been designated in the National Register of Historical Landmarks in 1988 ; and WHEREAS, the Venetian Causeway runs through the heart of an important and historic neighborhood of the City of Miami Beach; and WHEREAS, the Florida Department of Transportation has announced plans to rehabilitate and/or reconstruct the Venetian Causeway; and WHEREAS, as part of those plans the load bearing capacity of the Venetian Causeway may be increased; and WHEREAS, currently multi-axle vehicles in excess of five tons are restricted from using the Venetian Causeway as a result of the restricted load capacity of these bridges; and WHEREAS, the introduction of heavy, multi-axle vehicles to this neighborhood would create a significant safety hazard to pedestrians, bicyclists and roller bladers that currently use the Causeway for recreational purpose; and WHEREAS, the introduction of heavy, multi-axle vehicles would also detract from the residential character of this neighborhood; and WHEREAS, there are two alternative multi-lane highways in the MacArthur and Julia Tuttle Causeways, which do not run through residential neighborhoods, which may be used by heavy, multi-axle vehicles. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT DULY RESOLVED BY THE MAYOR AND CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA that Section 1. It is the expressed desire and intent of the City of Miami Beach to restrict, except Police, Fire, Garbage and Emergency vehicles, through regulation if appropriate, multi-axle vehicles in excess of five tons from using the Venetian Causeway. Section 2 . The City Attorney and City Administration are hereby directed to address this issue with all appropriate County, State and Federal agencies having jurisdiction over the roadway to insure the implementation of the directive of the Commission.
