A RESOLUTION OF THE MAYOR AND CITY COMMISSION
OF THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA,
AUTHORIZING THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH TO ACCEPT
A DONATION OF 113 NEW DISPLAY BOOK SHELF UNITS
FROM THE USA BOOK EXPO/PUBLISHERS BOOK
EXHIBIT, INC. , FOR DISTRIBUTION BY THE CITY AS
RECOMMENDED BY THE CITY MANAGER.
WHEREAS, the City of Miami Beach wishes to promote literacy
and make available book shelves to schools, civic organizations,
City Departments and members of the public who can establish a
specific need for same; and
WHEREAS, there is a need for schools, civic
organizations, City Departments and members of the public to make
use of these additional book shelves, if made available to them, in
a way that would benefit the citizenry of the community as a whole;
and
WHEREAS, USA Book Expo/Publishers Book Exhibit, Inc. , is
offering a donation of 113 new display book shelf units constructed
of wood, measuring seven feet high, four feet wide and eighteen
inches deep, with a 30 watt florescent light fixture, as a gesture
of good will towards the City of Miami Beach in recognition of the
City as the host of the 1993 USA Book Expo held at the Miami Beach
Convention Center from May 29th to June 1, 1993 , and in accordance
with their established policy of donating book shelves used during
their exposition to each previous host City,
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT DULY RESOLVED BY THE MAYOR AND CITY
COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA:
In recognition of the legitimate need to encourage
literacy and the display of books to encourage their use by the
citizenry, we, the Mayor and the City Commission of the City of
Miami Beach, do hereby accept USA Book Expo/Publishers Book
Exhibit, Inc. ' s donation to the City on behalf of the citizens of
Miami Beach to be distributed upon request and recommendation of
the City Manager of the City of Miami Beach.

SUBJECT: RESOLUTION AUTHORIZING THE MAYOR AND CITY COMMISSION TO
ACCEPT THE DONATION OF 113 NEW DISPLAY BOOK SHELF UNITS TO
THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH FOR SUBSEQUENT DISTRIBUTION BY THE
CITY AS RECOMMENDED BY THE CITY MANAGER
ADMINISTRATION RECOMMENDATION:
The City Administration recommends that the Mayor and the City
Commission accept the donation of 113 book shelf units from USA Book
Expo/Publishers Book Exhibit, Inc. , to be distributed by the City
upon request and as approved by the City Manager.
BACKGROUND:
On June 3 , 1993 , Jon Malinowski, President of The Publishers Book
Exhibit, Inc. , wrote to Mayor Seymour Gelber with an offer to donate
113 new display book shelf units used during their recent Exhibit at
the Miami Beach Convention Center. These units are constructed of
wood and consist of five (5) adjustable shelves. Each unit measures
seven (7) feet high, four (4) feet wide and are 18 inches deep, with
a 30 watt florescent light fixture. The value of these units is
estimated at $28, 000.
The donation was made as a gesture of gratitude to the City of Miami
Beach as the host City for the 1993 USA Book Expo and would enable
libraries, book stores and schools to benefit from these shelves as
a vehicle of encouraging literacy.
ANALYSIS:
The donation of the 113 book shelf units will be without cost to the
City and will subsequently be a welcome donation to many civic groups
and organizations. The City Manager will seek requests for the book
shelf units from various groups and will distribute the units
equitably based upon the level of requests.
CONCLUSION:
The Administration finds that the donation of the book shelf units
will benefit the City by providing practical storage space for books,
manuals and publications; particularly when distributed to school and
non-profit organizations that can derive a benefit from such a
donation.
