All copyrights reserved © 2020 Miami Beach, Florida N David Rockefeller commissioned Buell Mullen to create a mural for Chase Manhattan Bank’s (now JPMorgan Chase & Co.) 23rd Street branch in Manhattan. She created this nine-panel stainless steel mural depicting an assemblage of industrial architecture—bridges, radio towers, power plants, chemical storage facilities, and power lines—to show the role banking plays in the technological progress of mankind. Mullen developed a method of painting on stainless steel to produce permanent artwork: cross-hatched grooves to adhere epoxy paint. Some of her other steel projects include the Library of Congress; GM Tech Center in Detroit; United States Naval Academy; ITT Tower; Great Lakes Naval Training Station; and Republic Steel Corporation. Mural, 1957. Buell Mullen (American, 1901–1986). Stainless steel, epoxy. 13 ½ x 45 1/3 feet.
