No. LETTER TO COMMISSION February 1, 1999 TO: Mayor Neisen O. Kasdin and Members of the City mmission SUBJECT: CRIME ST A FROM: Sergio Rodriguez City Manager This Letter to the Commission is to advise the Mayor and City Commission of the 1998 crime statistics for the City. It is my pleasure to provide these statistics to you as we have had an 8% decrease in the number of Part I crimes reported 1998 vs 1997. The number of violent crimes committed (Homicide, Rape, Aggravated Assault, and Robbery) decreased an average of23%. Of particular note is that the number of residential burglaries decreased 38%. This is the largest decrease in the number of residential burglaries in the history of the City. Likewise, apartment burglaries decreased 20% and hotel and commercial burglaries decreased 14%. The Police Department has prepared the attached chart detailing these decreases. What is important to note, is that the Police Department accomplished this decrease in crime with over 50 vacant police officer positions. I believe that the Mayor and City Commission wish to join with me in recognizing the efforts of Chief Barreto and all of the men and women of our fine Police Department for these outstanding results.
