Emergency DemolitiorYOrder for 1475 Collins Avenue-Charles Hotel
Please be advised that an emergency demolition order has been issued by the Building
Official for the immediate demolition of the above referenced structure.
On November 17, 2003, the Building Official along with the City's structural engineer
conducted a thorough inspection of all the structural elements of the building and have
concluded that the building is in the imminent danger of collapse, and that the structure
poses an immediate danger to any construction work crew that may attempt to work in the
building, and therefore issued an order to close the building immediately. The recent
removal of all interior walls, ceilings and wall coverings has revealed the extent of structural
deterioration in all structural elements of the building that are considered beyond repair,
which are to the extent that would potentially cause a sudden collapse in the building. This
poses an immediate danger to the public, and therefore, on November 19, 2003, the
Building Official issued an emergency demolition order.
The City's Historic Preservation Officer and the members of the Historic Preservation
Board have been notified of the Building Official's order.
