Resolution 2021-31593 RESOLUTION NO. 2021-31593 A RESOLUTION OF THE MAYOR AND CITY COMMISSION OF MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA, RECOGNIZING AND HONORING NATIONAL BLACK HISTORY MONTH. Whereas, Black History Month, celebrated during the month of February, originated in 1926 when Dr. Carter G. Woodson, a noted historian, set aside a special period in February to recognize the heritage and achievements of Black people in the United States; and WHEREAS, with the Civil Rights Movement and a growing awareness of black identity, Black History Week evolved to an annual, monthly celebration of achievements by Black Americans and a time for recognizing the central role of Black Americans in U.S. history; and WHEREAS, many Black Americans lived, toiled, and died in obscurity, never achieving the recognition those individuals deserved, and yet paved the way for future generations to succeed; and 7 WHEREAS, Black History Month is a time to reflect on the struggles and victories of Black Americans throughout our country's history and to recognize their numerous contributions to this nation; and WHEREAS,the contributions of Black Americans from all walks of life and their endeavors to learn and thrive throughout history and make unforgettable marks in our country as artists, scientists, educators, business people, influential thinkers, members of the faith community, athletes, and political and governmental leaders, reflects the greatness of the United States; and WHEREAS, though we inherit the extraordinary progress won by the tears and toil of our predecessors, we know barriers still remain on the road to equal opportunity; and WHEREAS, remaining hopeful and confident about the path ahead, and a time to acknowledge the courageous fight for the rights, liberties, and freedoms for all Americans, the Mayor and City Commissioners of Miami Beach recognize and honor national Black History Month. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT DULY RESOLVED BY THE MAYOR AND CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA that the Mayor and the City hereby recognize and honor national Black History Month.
