SUBJECT: Parks and Recreation teams up with Artist Michele Oka Doner for
Biscayne Bay Project
The purpose of this L TC is to inform members of the City Commission that children enrolled in
the after-school and Play Time programs will be participating in an art project conceived by
Michele Oka Doner, in collaboration with Bas Fisher Invitational and The Bridge Initiative.
The work, entitled Tha/assia, is a collection of bound writing and ink drawings that compellingly
lay out the role that turtle grass plays in the health of the marine ecosystem, which Miami and all
its inhabitants are inextricably tied to. The project includes a postcard depiction of
the Thalassia work, generously supported in part by the Knight Foundation Arts Champion Award.
After viewing a short film about the artist and learning about the importance of Biscayne Bay,
participants will draw their perspective on marine life on postage-paid postcards, which are pre-
addressed to Mayor Daniella Levine Cava and Governor Ron Desantis, respectively. The artwork
and the postcards will facilitate children to voice their support for greater environmental impact
through policy and create a direct channel for communication with these governmental offices.
