SUBJECT: DOLPHINS CHALLENGE CANCER AND RACE TO THE BEACH
IMPACT ON CAUSEWAYS AND STREETS.
The purpose of this Letter to the Commission (“LTC”) is to inform and update the Mayor
and City Commission of upcoming 2021 Dolphins Challenge Cancer race and the 2021
Bike to the Beach.
The Dolphins Challenge Cancer is scheduled for Saturday, April 10, 2021 and will
impact the Julia Tuttle Causeway. This charity bike ride will close one eastbound lane of
the Julia Tuttle Causeway into Miami Beach. The overall timeframe impacting Miami
Beach is from 7:00 AM to 10:00 AM. The first wave of cyclists enter eastbound
I-195/Julia Tuttle Causeway, then across Arthur Godfrey Road / 41st Street, by 7:30 AM
and last cyclist by 10:00 AM. Once the cyclists reach Collins Avenue/AIA, they will head
northbound and conclude at the Hard Rock Stadium. There will not be any lane
reductions along Collins Avenue. The cyclists will ride in groups, escorted by Miami
Beach Police, Miami Dade Police and the Florida Highway Patrol with regular traffic flow.
As part of the charity bike ride, there are no stops in Miami Beach containing any onsite
activations or water stops.
The Race to the Beach is scheduled for Saturday, April 17, 2021 from 6:00 AM to 7:00
AM and will impact the Venetian Causeway, MacArthur Causeway and West Avenue in
Miami Beach. The race consists of approximately 60 cyclists entering Miami Beach via
the Venetian Causeway eastbound to 17th Street, proceeding southbound on West
Avenue and the exiting Miami Beach via the MacArthur Causeway. Two police units will
escort the cyclists. No roads will be fully closed or restricted vehicular traffic. Bike to the
Beach is a non-profit organization dedicated to raising money for autism awareness and
Intellectual or Developmental Disabilities (IDD), research and related direct service
providers. Bike to the Beach host bike rides in cities nationwide.
The City team (including Tourism & Culture, Transportation and Police) and race
producers have reviewed the Maintenance of Traffic (“MOT”) plans that will mitigate any
substantial negative impact on anyone entering or exiting Miami Beach during this
permitted event. The mission is to ensure that as our annual events return they can
proceed successfully, safely, and with minimal impact on the Causeway and our Miami
Beach neighborhoods.
