To meet their clients' goals, the firm creates a buzz in the marketplace via strategic local to national publicity campaigns, special event and marketing programs. This is the firm that created the special events that helped bring the Delano into the media spotlight, launched Mandarin Oriental Miami, and The Hotel, designed by fashion guru Todd Oldham. SB&A also introduced Ocean Drive Magazine to the world at large and brought South Beach's hottest restaurants, Wish, Tantra, Astor Place, Mark's Las Olas and Azul, global media coverage, including a prestigious New York Times eight-part Chef's series for chef/restaurateur Mark Militello and a full page Esquire magazine feature citing Azul as "the best new restaurant in the U.S." SB&A artfully handles celebrity relations, and has worked on events with stellar lights including Madonna, Calvin Klein, Cameron Diaz, Antonio Banderas, Rupert Everett, Sophia Loren, Greg Allman, zz. Top, Tito Puente, Celia Cruz, Cachao and Chayenne. The firm also represented many of the mega clients that have made Miami the arts and entertainment hub of Latin America. These include Art Miami, the Miami Film Festival, MIDEM Americas, The Recording Academy and the Latin Recording Academy, BMI, Universal Music and BMG US-Latin, among others. Overseeing strategy and day-to-day operations for her firm, Brustman brings more than 20 years of public relations expertise and experience to her clients. A seasoned journalist, prior to launching SB&A, she helped establish the Los Angeles Free Press and was affiliated with New York magazine. A South Beach pioneer, in 1985 she was chosen to represent The Strand, the restaurant that sparked the area's turnaround. Since then, she has sustained an evolving network of high profile media contacts that enable the firm to publicize clients from the local to the national level with unrivaled expertise. An active participant in community affairs, Brustman is a member of the Executive Board of the Greater Miami Convention & Visitors Bureau and director of the Bureau's public relations task force. She also sits on the board of the American Institute of Wine & Food, founded by Julia Child and Robert Mondavi. Senior account executive Lawrence Carrino is adept at creating local to national publicity campaigns for a variety of high profile clients. These include award-winning chef Mark Militello and his quartet of Mark's Restaurants, Sunny Isle's new culinary hotspot, Timo, the new restaurant Pao at the Clinton Hotel, The Hotel- designed by fashion guru Todd Oldham - and its restaurant, Wish, among others. He also co-chairs the public relations committee for the March of Dimes annual Star Chefs event. Rounding out the creative team effort is account executive Megan Connolly. A talented writer and publicist, she is the SB&A point person for Hispanic media in both North and South America and represents accounts including Art Miami, Clinton Hotel, Escopazzo and SushiSamba dromo. ( RESUME FOR WILLIAM FARKAS 585 I Nonh Bay Road Miami Beach Florida JJ 140 305861-7881 billfarkaS@ao1.com Summary: An experienced administrator with a background in arts management, fundraising, and community development. Skills include problem.solving, financial turnarounds, consensus- building, political persuasion. Emphasis on city-building, the arts, and hi &her education. Experience ranges from planning and overseeing the development of downtown Fort Lauderdale to the construction and operation of the Broward Center for the Performing Arts to the current operation ofa oon-profit visual arts center. Professional fundraising background includes Broward Center for the Perfonning Arts, Florida Atlantic University, Art CentEr/South Florida, as wel1 as volunteer efforts for the Miami Design Preservation League. Work Experience/Florida: Art Cenler/SoUlII Florida, OSlO1-present As executive director, I brought the Art Center's finances under control (taking it from a $250,000 deficit to a $30,000 surplus), gained greater national stature for the artists with participation in both Art Basel and ArtMiami, helped the artists attain more local exposure with such programs as the Walgreen's window exhibits. I ran two successful fundraising raffles, secured the physical plant with new infrastructure improvements such as air-conditioning, developed an internship program with New World School of the Arts, established with the Miami Beach Chamber of Commerce a Sister Cities exchange program with artists from Japan, created a winter residency program in conjunction with the Ohio Council on the Arts. I worked to eleva~ the quality of exhibitions, gained the cooperation of other institutions and galleries, and secured corporate underwriting from such companies lI.S Altoids and Tanqueray as exhibition sponsors. Consult"nt, Florid" Atlantic University, Fort Lauderdale Campus, 1198~5/O1 As a consultant to FAU's College of Architecture, Urban and Public Affairs, I raised funds for a range of programs ill architecture, urban planning, social work, and criminology, conceiving many of them on my own or in concert with members of the faculty. 1 worked with governmental agencies, private corporations and local and national foundations. I was able to establish methodology and procedures, and to inaugurate special programs. I also began a collection of fine architectural objects by securing a donation of an original Rietveld "Zig Zag Chair." Conslllttmt/Actlng Director, ColollY Theatre, 9/98-1/99 My primary client was the Concert Association of Florida. I programmed and ran the Colony Theatre during a period of search for the new director. I also did limited fundraising for the Concert Association and worked with the director as a general consultant. DEC-1S-2003 11:23 "'.~ .",~~ ". "':,- .. t.~ CITY MIAMI BCH CLERK DEPT 305 6737254 P.12I3 ~ , , Broward Center for the Performing ArB, 3/89-9/98 As the founding President and Chief Executive Officer of the Browud Center, 1 was responsible for overseeing aU aspects of constnlction, financing. development, programming. and community relations in a time period that wellt from early construction through the center's fifth anniversary. I was able to ensure that the center was completed on time, alld for five years ran one of the few American performing arts complexes that did not lose money. The Center is the Fort Lauderdale home for the region's major performing arts organizations, and I maintained excellent relationships with all of the center's primary users (Florida Philhannonic, The Concert Association, PACE Theatricals, Dillard School for the Performing Arts ETC) as well as with such organizations as the Miami City Ballet and the New World Symphony. I was able to establish a significant outreach program that attracted more than 70,000 schoolchildren each year. I worked directly with a thirteen-member board, with the Center's non-profit fundraising foundation, and with local business, civic, and cultural leaders as well as the public partners in the collaborative venture: City of Fort Lauderdale, Broward County, State of Florida, Broward School Board, and the Downtown Development Authority. Downtown Development Authority, Fort Lauderdale, 11/75-2/89 As executive director of the Downtown Development Authority, I was responsible for creating and executing a new city center. During my tenure, the property valuation in this special taxing district grew from $120 million to more than $477 million, and the downtown work force increased from 9,000 to more than 22,000.1 persuaded the Museum of Art and Broward Main Libl'lll'Y to build downtown, as well as Florida Atlantic University. I was instrumental in creating the land package and the legislation that led to the Broward Center for the Performing Arts and in developing an Arts and Science District thll1 included the museum and library, as well as the Museum of Discovery and SciencellMAX Theater, the Broward Center, and a "music park" for smaller outdoor concerts. A key to creating this campus-like. downtown was the construction of CityPark, a public parking garage that integrated into urban life with plazas and shops. Another key was creating the Riverwalk Park, and encouraging private developers and governmental bodies (including the Broward County commission) to relocate in downtown Fort Lauderdale. My interests and experience coincide with the needs of the Council, and I believe I would be a valuable addition to your group. As you can see by my attached resume, I have participated in the cultural and political life of Miami-Dade and Miami Beach for many years. My husband and I were founders of the New World School of the Arts and involved in Miami Design Preservation League and Miami Beach Community Development Corporation. I served on the Board of the Art Center: South Florida for several years, and was a founding member of the Gay and Lesbian Film Festival Board, based in Miami Beach. In addition, I was on the executive committee of the Miami International Film Festival from its second year until 1991, and have served on various fund-raising and events committees for the Bass Museum, MOCA, the Wolfsonian Museum, Miami Light Project, the Miami City Ballet, the Arts for Learning Project, the Dance for Life steering committee, and the Education Fund. I am a long term member, as well, of the Grants Committee of the South Florida Gay and Lesbian Foundation (formerly Dade Human Rights Foundation) and the Women's Fund. My commitment to the arts and my community in Miami-Dade County has never wavered. My background includes being politically involved for many years, going back to serving as a senator in the student government from the School of Social Work at flU. More recently, I have volunteered for many Miami Beach mayoral and commission campaigns and maintain an excellent working relationship with all of the current elected officials as well as the city staff. Combining my love of the arts with my history of volunteerism, I have served on the City's Fine Arts Board and am presently completing my final term on the Art in Public Places Board, where I have been vice chair for four years. Steve Sauls, Chairperson November 6. 2003 Page 2 For much of my professional life, I served as a grant writer for various organizations. In that capacity, I combined fund raising with my other duties. I look at the latter as one of my most creative skills. I hope my interests, experience, political savvy and love of Miami Beach, the best community in America, will ensure my appointment to the Cultural Arts Council. Respectfully, , "-.
