A RESOLUTION OF THE MAYOR AND CITY COMMISSION OF MIAMI
BEACH, FLORIDA, DECLARING MAY 22, 2021 AS "HARVEY MILK
DAY" IN THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH.
WHEREAS, Harvey Milk Day is organized by the Harvey Milk Foundation and celebrated
each year on May 22 in memory of Harvey Milk, a gay rights activist assassinated in 1978; and
WHEREAS, Harvey Milk Day came about as a day to remember and teach about Milk's
life and his work to stop the discrimination against the LGBTQ community; and
WHEREAS, Harvey Milk was a prominent gay activist in 1970's and ran for office as an
openly gay man three times before becoming the first openly gay person elected into California
public office, where he acted as a city supervisor; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Milk's unprecedented loud and unapologetic proclamation of his
authenticity as an openly gay public official gave hope to LGBTQ people everywhere at that time;
and
WHEREAS, Mr. Milk was not only an advocate for the LGBT community, but for all
minorities—he believed in safe, strong neighborhoods and supported public education, affordable
childcare, and equal rights for all; and
WHEREAS, during the last year of his life, Mr. Milk successfully fought against a
homophobic legislation mandating the firing of any California teacher who was gay or was in
support of gay rights, which was spearheaded by California State Senator John Briggs and Anita
Bryant, an anti-gay rights activist infamous for efforts to repeal a Miami-Dade County ordinance
banning discrimination based on sexual orientation; and
WHEREAS, while his life was tragically cut short, Milk's legacy has continued to shine
bright and leave a long-lasting impact on the development of gay rights in the U.S.
WHEREAS, Harvey Milk's contributions to the cause of equality for all people has been
recognized in a number of ways, including the issuance of a stamp with his picture on it, the
posthumous awarding of the Medal of Freedom, and the creation of a holiday in his memory; and
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT DULY RESOLVED BY THE MAYOR AND CITY
COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA that the Mayor and the City hereby
declare May 22, 2021 as "Harvey Milk Day" in the City of Miami Beach.
