A RESOLUTION OF THE MAYOR AND CITY COMMISSION OF
THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA, STRONGLY
CONDEMNING ANTI-SEMITISM, ISLAMOPHOBIA,
HOMOPHOBIA, TRANSPHOBIA, RACISM, DISCRIMINATION
AGAINST ASIAN-AMERICANS AND PACIFIC ISLANDERS,AND
ALL OTHER FORMS OF DISCRIMINATION.
WHEREAS, the Anti-Defamation League, a non-profit tracking anti-Semitism, has
received nearly 200 reports of possible anti-Semitic incidents, up from 131 the week before the
deadly fighting escalated in the Gaza Strip between Israel and militant group Hamas; and
WHEREAS, mosques in the United States have reported damage in recent days, as well
– on May 13, a mosque was vandalized in Brooklyn, New York,with anti-Palestinian graffiti during
one of the holiest days in the Muslim faith; and
WHEREAS, according to the Human Rights Campaign, at least 11 transgender people
have been murdered so far in 2021 —a 266 percent increase from this point in 2020; and
WHEREAS, since January 2020, there has been a dramatic increase in reports of hate
crimes and incidents against those of Asian descent in all 50 States and the District of Columbia,
largely due to the perpetuated anti-Asian stigma that arose in response to the COVID-19
pandemic; and
WHEREAS, the rise of violence and discrimination aimed at people of different religions,
gender identities, races, and ethnicities is extremely troubling, and must be condemned; and
WHEREAS, the City of Miami Beach remains steadfast in its commitment to fight
antisemitism, homophobia, transphobia, racism, discrimination against Asian-Americans and
Pacific Islanders, and all other forms of discrimination with every ounce of energy and tools at its
disposal.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT DULY RESOLVED BY THE MAYOR AND CITY
COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA, that the Mayor and City
Commission hereby strongly condemn anti-semitism, islamophobia, homophobia, transphobia,
racism, discrimination against Asian-Americans and Pacific Islanders, and all other forms of
discrimination.
