RESOLUTION OF THE MAYOR AND CITY COMMISSION
OF THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA, URGING THE
UNITED STATES COAST GUARD TO ADOPT ITS
CURRENT PILOT DRAWBRIDGE WEEKEND OPERATING
SCHEDULE FOR THE 63RD STREET BASCULE BRIDGE
ON A PERMANENT BASIS.
WHEREAS, on December 14, 2020, following a request from a private citizen, the
U.S. Coast Guard ("USCG") initiated a new weekend schedule for the 63rd Street bascule
bridge on a pilot basis to test the general operations of navigation and vehicular traffic;
and
WHEREAS, Vice-Mayor Micky Steinberg long championed establishing a
weekend schedule for the 63rd Street drawbridge in order to alleviate vehicular traffic
congestion on land, while ensuring that the reasonable needs of navigation are
maintained; and
WHEREAS, the current pilot weekend schedule restricts bridge openings on
Saturdays and Sundays, with the drawbridge opening on the hour and half-hour (only if
there is demand), from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., except on federal holidays when the bridge
operates on-demand; and
WHEREAS, prior to the weekend pilot schedule, on Saturdays and Sundays, the
drawbridge operated on-demand with no set schedule, opening whenever a vessel
wished to cross; and
WHEREAS, the weekend pilot schedule commenced on December 14, 2020,
and is set to expire on June 11, 2021; and
WHEREAS, the USCG has originally imposed a deadline of May 27, 2021 for
the City, and any member of the public wishing to comment on a proposed change to the
operating schedule of the 63 Street Bridge, which crosses Indian Creek; which has since
been extended for an additional thirty (30) days; and
WHEREAS, keeping the current pilot drawbridge operating schedule during the
weekends with set times helps alleviate vehicle congestion that occurs due to
unregulated, on-demand bridge openings, and will better serve the needs of vehicle
traffic, while ensuring that the reasonable needs of navigation are maintained; and
WHEREAS, at the May 26, 2021 City Commission meeting, the Mayor and City
Commissioners, after discussing the operating schedule of the 63rd Street drawbridge,
unanimously urged the USCG to adopt its current pilot drawbridge weekend operating
schedule on a permanent basis.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT DULY RESOLVED BY THE MAYOR AND CITY
COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA, that the Mayor and City
Commission hereby urge the United States Coast Guard to adopt its current pilot
drawbridge weekend operating schedule for the 63rd Street bascule bridge on a
permanent basis.
