LTC 036-2004 Relay for Life Event on Miami BeachCITY OF MIAMI BEACH Office of th.e City Manager Letter to Commission No. 036-2004 To: From: Subject: Mayor David Dermer and Members of the City Commission Jorge M. Gonzalez t ~ City Manager RELAY FOR LIFE EVENT ON MIAMI BEACH Date: February 6, 2004 The purpose of this L.T.C. is to advise you that on behalf of the Administration, I am pleased to again join Mayor Dermer and vadous members of the City Commission to actively support a very important community ddven effort, the American Cancer Society's "Relay for Life," in the City of Miami Beach. This event is to be held over a 24 hour pedod of time from May 15-16, 2004 on the field at Miami Beach Senior High School. Funds raised from this event will go directly to cancer research, clinical tdals, legislative advocacy and education. Ronnie Singer has agreed to continue to coordinate the City's Participation in this family-oriented fundraising event which celebrates survivors and honors those no longer with us. Raising money should not be difficult since regrettably, we have all been made acutely aware of cancer's gdp as we ourselves, our co-workers, our families and fdends are stricken and battle this disease. At this year's Relay event, special tributes will be made to three members of our City '?amily" who fought valiantly and yet lost their lives to cancer. They are: Alicia Garcia, Commissioner Luis Garcia's wife, Larry Levy, and Joseph Johnson. Last year, City employees baked, cooked and sold goods and services totaling $32,000 of the $110,000 net total that this first year event raised. As a result, Miami Beach was recognized statewide with the "Rookie of the Year Award". To ensure continued success of the Relay for Life on Miami Beach, I believe that we need involvement at all employee levels. As was the case last year, it is my sincere hope that Miami Beach's "Relay for Life" event will have the full support of all City Departments, Divisions, as well as that of all our elected officials. I am hopeful that this City will enter a significant number of teams that will get creative, have fun and at the same time raise money and awareness. I invite each of you to become actively involved as well. With current statistics revealing that I in 3 people will have some form of cancer in their lifetime, the time to find a cure is now, and that takes funding. As more details become available, I will share with you. If you have any questions before then, please feel free to contact me.
