Resolution 2021-31944RESOLUTION NO. 2021-31944 A RESOLUTION OF THE MAYOR AND CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA, DECLARING DECEMBER 10, 2021, AS "HUMAN RIGHTS DAY" IN THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH, AND ENCOURAGING MIAMI BEACH RESIDENTS TO WORK TOGETHER IN THE COMING YEAR TO ACHIEVE GREATER PROGRESS IN RESPECTING, PROTECTING, AND FULFILLING THE FULL RANGE OF HUMAN RIGHTS CONTAINED IN THE UNIVERSAL DECLARATION FOR ALL MEMBERS OF OUR COMMUNITY. WHEREAS, at its November 8, 2021 meeting, the City's Human Rights Advisory Committee approved a motion requesting the Mayor and City Commission to proclaim December 10, 2021 as "Human Rights Day" in the City of Miami Beach; and WHEREAS, December 10, 2021 marks the 73rd anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights ("UDHR") by the United Nations, and cities around the world, including the City of Miami Beach, are recommitting to upholding our fundamental human rights; and WHEREAS, the UDHR represents the shared commitment of all nations to build a more humane world after the devastation of World War II and the Holocaust; and WHEREAS, since 1950, December 10th has been declared as Human Rights Day where all nations memorialize the achievement of an international consensus on basic rights, and recommit themselves to upholding, defending and respecting the human rights of all; and WHEREAS, national and global forces fostering hatred, prejudice, and violence towards vulnerable populations threaten the very fabric of civic life in our city, nation and world, which calls for a renewed commitment to the fundamental principles of human rights; and WHEREAS, the City first enacted its current Human Rights Ordinance and supporting Human Rights Committee in 2010, and since then expanded the protections under the Ordinance to cover vast marginalized and minority groups, becoming a leader on a national and global scale; and WHEREAS, the City is dedicated to preserving, protecting, and promoting human rights and human dignity of its diverse communities, and is committed to building Miami Beach to be a diverse and caring community of good neighbors who are committed to racial equity, and inclusive of our diverse communities. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE MAYOR AND CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA, that the Mayor and City Commission hereby declare December 10, 2021, as "Human Rights Day" in the City of Miami Beach, and encourage Miami Beach residents to work together in the coming year to achieve greater progress in respecting, protecting, and fulfilling the full range of human rights contained in the Universal Declaration for all members of our community.
