In accordance with the City Code, the above -referenced item is to consider Mayor Gelber's specific proposal to co -name the portion of Meridian Avenue, located between Dade Boulevard and 28th Street in honor of the late Rabbi Solomon Schiff. On September 17, 2021, the Mayor and City Commission adopted Ordinance No. 2021- 4439, amending Section 82-503(c) of the CityCode to provide for additional criteria for the co -naming of streets in honor of prominent Jewish figure who made significant civic contributions to Jewish history and/or Jewish -related initiatives. Pursuant to the request of Mayor Dan Gelber, the co -naming of a yet to be determined city street "Rabbi Solomon Schiff Way" was referred to the Neighborhood and Quality of Life Committee ("NQLC") for the Committee's consideration and review. Rabbi Solomon Schiff ("Rabbi Schiff") was a pivotal force in building South Florida's Jewish community who advocated for racial justice and built interfaith relationships locally and around the world. Rabbi Schiff was a former director of the Greater Miami Jewish Federation's Jewish Chaplaincy Program (now Mishkan Miami), and a past executive vice president of the Rabbinical Association of Greater Miami, and served both organizations for more than 40 years. Rabbi Schiff was also a founding member and a past chairman of the Holocaust Memorial Miami Beach, a committee of the Greater Miami Jewish Federation. Rabbi Schiff was on the forefront of building interfaith and interracial relations since coming to South Florida in 1958, including welcoming Pope John Paul II to Miami in Page 800 of 1313 Commission Memorandum ' I Page 2 of 2 September 1987. In May, 1963 — just after he became president of the Rabbinical Association - he joined with other community clergy in calling for equal rights for all during the height of the Civil Rights Movement. For his service on interfaith relations, Rabbi Schiff received a Papal Medal from Pope Benedict XVI in 2008, and in in 2017, he received a Legion of Honor Award from the Philadelphia -based Chapel of the Four Chaplains, joining the ranks of other past recipients including former United States Presidents Harry Truman, Dwight D. Eisenhower, Jimmy Carter and Ronald Reagan as well as Nelson Mandela, former U.S. Sen. Bill Nelson and comedian/actor Bob Hope. At its September 20, 2021 meeting, the NQLC considered the request, and recommended in favor of the co -naming. The City Administration consulted with Rabbi Schiff s family and determined that co -naming the portion of Meridian Avenue, located between Dade Boulevard and 28"' Street after Rabbi Schiff would be especially fitting considering that he resided at 2444 Meridian Avenue for over 50 years. As Meridian Avenue is a platted, public road, the proposed co -naming must be approved by the Miami -Dade County Board of County Commissioners pursuant to Rule 9.02 of Section 2-1 of the Miami -Dade County Code.
